Is it really? If I didn't know better I would immediately assume they were a bunch of PBR-swilling hicks from...well, somewhere in Illinois.
Same

I probably have them at number 2

I'm not saying there's anything weird about them being someone's FAVORITE American band of all-time, but greatest?

Who is the one band ahead of them in your book, stip? R.E.M.?

Stip and I probably agree on who should get the greatest american rock band of all time title.

I need to go shower.

Yeah.

I may have been to hasty putting pj at 2. I'm not sure I believe it, but I'd be prepared to argue it.

They were on the path to being in the running. But then, ya know.

They need one more truly great album. As much as I love the last two they're certainly not classics

Although I don't know that a decline should eliminate you, especially if you are still consistently releasing good albums past your prime

I think it depends on your definition of greatness, and I think to a lot of people longevity plays a big role in it. It also helps that their career started famous essentially, it wasn't a hit it big, then find the back catalog situation for most fans. Another thing that really helps them in this argument is that they never broke up, at least officially. They have toured pretty regularly, and maintained somewhat of a public profile throughout the entire run.

So I think the debate is more on what defines "greatness" than it is if Pearl Jam qualifies.

I think longevity should play a role-or maybe just the size of the catalog

I guess I probably value longevity less than most people do. I'd take a scorching 2-4 album run surrounded by mediocrity (or even nothing) over a steady 10 album run any day.

Pearl Jam could conceivably make my top five depend on whether or not we're talking about artists in general or specifically bands.

If we're talking artists they have no prayer of cracking the top five, but if Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen are suddenly out of the running, they could slip in. They probably wouldn't though.

To be clear, I'm using a pretty limited/conventional definition of rock band.

The irony of me championing pearl jam here is that I likely cut their prime off by at least 2-3 albums before everyone else
