Whenever mention is made of 'soaring Eddie Vedder vocals' as being desirable in and of themselves, I think of this exchange and Jorge's corn chip simile (yes, I've thought it about it a lot in recent weeks):

I'm sorry Stip but this is one of the straight-up dumbest things I've ever read here. Think about what you're saying for a minute. The complaints about the songwriting are really complaints about Eddie's voice.

Maybe you perceive Pearl Jam songs as merely serviceable delivery methods for soaring Eddie Vedder vocal performances, much like a corn chip is a serviceable delivery method for dip. But that's definitely not the case for everybody here.

that is an impressive pull of a nine year old thread. And for many many people, thats something eddie does better than just about anyone, and is absolutely a draw and a good in itself. even if the song around it is kinda lame at least they elevate that moment

exhibit a: chorus of gone

but i recognize not for everyone here. its a big tent. It's no different than the sub section of fans who have the same reaction to a song that appears in 13/4 time or whatever

it's just a timestamp of where people were in their lives then.

That was a pretty toxic time on the board, insofar as I remember. That was the stretch I stopped posting for year long stretches, or close to it. Not a fun time for me to be a fan.

To be clear, I didn't drag that quote back up with any ill intent. It's just lived rent free in my head for almost a decade, reasserting itself whenever appropriate, and I felt it was finally worth hunting down the original post.

Full disclosure - I'm not very good at identifying unusual time signatures (e.g. if something is in 7/4), even though I enjoy lots of music that uses them to great effect.
