It is catchy!blueviper wrote:Ok, I might not skip it as often as I thought. It’s very catchy.
It's also cringe and too on-the-nose, sure, but also sweet and kind of touching. I dig it

Re: Something Special
The man's love for his daughters is uncomplicated. He wrote an uncomplicated song about it. Kids are dumb. He wrote a song that offers them advice in a straightforward manner, without them having to decide metaphors. 'Try things, fail at things, accept invitations, you don't need a man, remember I'm here for you when you need me, I love you'.
It is a little surprising that one of the most accomplished songwriters of the last forty years wrote this song, as opposed to my random cousin? Yes. But it's sweet

My two girls (9 and 7) have gone from kinda liking this song to thinking it's awesome and requesting it every day...soooo, my personal opinion doesn't really matter at this point, it's a home run in my book.

the difference is that your random cousin wouldnt have included the last line- which elevates a sweet song into something specialThe Argonaut wrote:The man's love for his daughters is uncomplicated. On the uncomplicated side, one would at least have to admit that it takes cojones to write something as straight forward and sappy as SS.
Once written, you need another set cojones to include it on your band's 12th album instead of a one-off solo EP or B-side.

And the tremendous line that elevates the song is what exactly? "We've done all we can do"? lol what. My cousin would totally write that, it's not a great line at all
I really really like this song. Don't try to defend it as being deep. It's not, and that's kind of it's strength

Re: Something Special
i think it turns it into a song about fear and inadequacy and how impossible it is to protect the people you care about from hurt and loss and pain, underneath the lighter pep talk dad jokes
still a very sweet song, but it gives it layers and it does all of that with seven words right at the end, which is more impactful for its efficency measured against a song with so much almost nervous energy around getting it all out before its too late

Re: Something Special
something doesn't have to be complex in its construction to have depth, I agree that line adds a lot to the song

Re: Something Special
What elevates the song IMO is the chorus
When you realize these are very bittersweet lyricsOh, and someday you (Ah-ah)
May find yourself in the place that I now do
And someway you
Gonna have to let it go
And I got proof (Ah-ah)
For my heart, it aches and breaks
But I believe in you
Whoa, ain't it, oh, ain't it the truth?

The worm has found its way into my ear. I found myself singing the chorus of this one with delight today. Moved from 2 stars (not bad) to 3 stars (good, would be very good if not for some of the lyrics that still make me cringe despite their intent to be on the nose).

Re: Something Special
Musically it's pretty good.
But lyrically it's in the vein of overly-verbose Hallmark cards. It's the thing you buy if you don't know how to express a feeling on your own. My least favorite EV genre is the "notes I put in my family's lunch boxes".
I would be really curious what Eddie's daughters think about having such an on-the-nose song put on an official Pearl Jam album. My kid hates it when I cheer to loud at baseball games. He'd open up a crack in space time to hide in if I did something like this.

pretty sure that they're not kids anymore so they probably think "cute gesture" then get on with their daylvc wrote:Musically it's pretty good.
