Most people who hate this song wouldn't have been at all happy for the band to write another 'Black' either. Nobody is saying that 'Sirens' is the same quality as 'Black', far from it, but it's just my observation that a lot of people who hate this song have also grown out of Ten. But in this album, to my ears, it seems to be their intention to grab the kind of audience that loved that kind of overtly-emotional, manipulative Pearl Jam. I can see that they were that, now that I'm older and the "grunge" veneer has disappeared, but wow, they became anything but that by the time Binaural and Riot Act came around. So yes, this is vintage Pearl Jam, but in 2013, accounting for some of the awkwardness.

And I still wonder if the Bob Rock thing is happening, even in spite of liking these songs.

Someone posted these lyrics in the comments of a lyrics site and I think these are right. I dunno if anything had here was better but one thing they have that nobody else is said is Im pretty sure its "The slightest bit of light" not this light is alive or whatever. The only thing that I think could be off is some of the tenses. (Can't tell if it's studied your face or study your face for example. I'm not sure he's right that it's 'studied' at the end but I have no idea really)

Hear the siren
Hear the sirens
Hear the sirens, hear the circus so profound
I- hear the sirens more and more in this here town

Let me catch my breath
to breathe and reach across the bed
Just to know we're safe-
I am a grateful man

The slightest bit of light and I can see you clear
Have to take your hand and feel your breath
for fear this someday will be over

I pulled you close, so much to lose
knowin' that nothing lasts forever

I didn't care before you were here
I danced in laughter with the ever after
but all things change, let this remain

Hear the sirens coverin' distance in the night
The sound echoing closer
Will they come for me next time?

For every choice mistake I made it's not my plan
oh- to send you in the arms of another man
And if you choose to stay
I'll wait; I'll understand

It's a fragile thing, this life we lead
If I think too much I can get over-whelmed
by the grace by which we live our lives
with death over our shoulders

Want you to know that should I go
I always loved you
Held you high above, too
I studied your face, the fear goes away

break - guitar solo

It's a fragile thing, this life we lead
If I think too much I can get over-whelmed
by the grace by which we live our lives
with death over our shoulders

Want you to know, that should I go
I always loved you
Held you high above, too
I studied your face, the fear goes away
The fear goes away
The fear goes away

[Ah - ah]
[Oh - oh]
[repeat]

Yep. It's what made me say "I'll keep the studio version, cheers." He frequently makes those flubs live but they allowed this one into the video... eek.

If they released a best of: Lightning Bolt and Backspacer vs. Binaural and Riot Act...a few years from now... which would "fly off the shelves" faster?

They'll all be outsold by Re-Backspacer (ala Metallica's Re-Load). With the hit single The Fixer II.

binaural and riot act probably, since no one who isn't a die hard pj fan buys pj albums anymore.

Nah, they would get slaughtered. And the reason is, as much as some 'here' hate Backspacer (and now songs like Sirens from LB), the people who buy PJs music in mass don't. Those who think their worst-liked albums (Riot Act and Binaural) are the best, should probably come to the realization that they are PJ hipsters... and PJ doesn't really care about them.

I'm really enjoying the new music, guys, but I don't have to insult the middle-period stuff to enjoy it. It's a different kettle of fish.
