It was a weird sequence.
yep.

One thing I really hate is when a team that is penalized for something after a TD, like taunting / un-sportsman like conduct, they (NFL rule makers) enforce the penalty for the kickoff.

I don't know why it bothers me, but it does. With the PAT being pushed back, imagine a 15 yarder on top of it. There would be legitimate chances to miss the PAT.

Or, enforce after the kickoff, and add 15 yards. So if kicked out of the endzone, the O starts on the 35.

I think something like that would make it more interesting.

I like it when they add it to the kickoff, so it's from the 50 and then the kickoff goes through the uprights. I get to yell, "It's good!" and then everyone at the bar starts paying attention and complaining how the refs fucked that up too.

Yes, that sounds good to me.

On another front, I just thought about another possible abuse of penalties that came up when I was watching the Broncos/Bears game yesterday:

The scenario is this: there's about 10 seconds or less before halftime, and Team A is deep in Team B's red zone. Team A has a FG in hand, but they of course would really like a TD if they can get it. So here's the hack: Team B blatantly commits holding and pass interference all over the place to ensure that Team A can't get into the end zone. Team A will get one more play, even if it's an untimed down, to kick the FG, but they do get denied the TD. I guess the reason why defenses don't do this is because they have enough bravado to think that they can always force a turnover in this situation to come away with giving up 0 points.

Now, the NFL did address this loophole with regards to too many players on the field in formation (Buddy Ryan's infamous "Polish Goalline") by calling it a dead ball foul, but you can't do that with other fouls. So here's the simple rule change: inside of 1 minute, if the defense commits a foul the offense has the choice to turn back the clock to what it previously was before the play was run--the inverse of the 10-second runoff on offense, in other words.

Some day, when the defense has a complete meltdown and racks up a bunch of penalties to push the kickoff way forward, I want the scoring team to attempt an onside kick just to add to their misery. I could easily see Belichick doing that.

I still hate how some holding calls are spot fouls which can result in a 15+yard penalty. It's so stupid.

There are all sorts of stupid rules as it relates to NFL penalties. HALF THE DISTANCE TO THE GOAL. From the 2. That personal foul that almost killed a guy is a 1 yard penalty.

Or the whole notion of offsetting penalties.

Or ANY defensive penalty on an extra point. Most kickoffs are touchbacks anyways, so why the hell not do some dirty stuff on the PAT.

For the love of all that is holy, NFL, if a PAT can't change the outcome of the game, then it's absolutely pointless to force the winning team to execute an attempt if there's no time left on the clock.

They pushed them back so they'd be more exciting. They are more exciting. The NFL sells entertainment. Thus they should be required

It guess it is entertaining to see all the players, coaches, and media rushing the field in their usual roles knowing the game is over until they get shooed off by just seven officials.

The Patriots once scored a TD on an untimed down to end a game against the Bills after a controversial pass inference call. The Bills left the field so the Pats ran the XP without the other team out there. The holder handed it off to the kicker for 2.

I forgot to add the "Sorry, mecca" which is required for all mentions of the Bills.
