he's has some kinda terminal illness and that's why he decided to come back. Whatever he said his dad had but there was no record of. Though that was 2 years ago, a bit long for a terminal illness, just plain suicidal then?
I can't decide whether to rewatch all 7 episodes in time to watch the last one, or watch the 8th and then rewatch the whole series. Hmmmmmmm.

i think he just feels guilt over not getting the right guy in 95, nothing more. not even guilt really, but a sense of duty to do the job right.

Yeah, and like some of Marty's motivations mentioned above (Why does he react so violently to child abuse?) I doubt we'll ever get a full explanation.

a lot folks are going to be let down when they realize the common plot twists utilized in most other shows aren't coming.

No longer in love with this show.
8 episodes seems too short now. They set the table with such a rich, bizarre world with those first 3 episodes that I really feel like we are missing out on a lot of great shit. That shift into focusing on the case at hand was too abrupt for me. I would have loved to linger more on those lost years instead of uniting them again so quickly.

i hear you on this. the first 3 eps will likely end up being the best, particularly ep3.

10 - 12 would have been perfect I think. I kinda wanted a bit more of 2002 or pre 2002. I think their fight and rust quitting would have had more of an impact if we had seen a little more of the 'good years'. And rust having a girlfriend for 30 seconds was a bit weird, I thought we were gonna see rust trying to be normal/them breaking up or something.

I'd include episodes 4 & 5 in that perfect stretch. 5 being my favorite.

Good.
Yeah a lot of these theories seem to be from people who have watched too many episodes of 24.
