Really enjoying the first album after a few listens through. I'll probably move on to the second one sometime next week. We Made a Mountain and What We Gained in the Fire are my early favorites.

Don't even try to ask me to pick a favorite from that first album. Can't do it. Title track? Give it Time? Right Place? Good Heart? Fuck if I know!

Yeah, that first album has a bunch of really good tunes. These are my standout tracks:

Numbers Don't Lie
We Made a Mountain
Right Place

I've scratched my head at a Stip opinion or two, but this one might make me bleed. The fact that Pete even kinda agrees has turned this today upside down for me.

I have to rethink... everything.
Listen, I have no problem with the chorus in Generals. The only thing I think is a little silly is the "hey all my sisters...what you want...hey all my brothers...what you got..." part.

I'm really glad you're taking time with the first before moving on to the second. What We Gained in the Fire is just tops. The opening lines to that song are some of my favorite lyrics.

But it's such a great homage/throwback to 60s/70s protest rock. I think it's goddamn genius. And I think Stip's opinion is a poo-poo head lasagna face.

To me it just comes off a bit manufactured.

The rest of that song is top notch. What we gained in the fire is probably my overall favorite

It's all "manufactured". People don't make songs by accident. Unless you're Jandek.

It's pretty much a rallying manifesto, that song (or 'womanifesto'). I think Durden's protest throwback comment is true. What protest march doesn't include cliches?

"What do we want?"

"When do we want it?"

Manufactured implies a certain degree of artifice, like it was constructed from a set of plans. As opposed to the phrase, crafted, for instance, which has more organic connotations

The word "manufactured' implies that something is made in a factory environment. Saying something sounds manufactured means that it lacks individual character and doesn't sound like anyone spent much time on it. So there.

Let me clarify. I don't really have much of a problem with that call and response part on the album version of the song. The way it's mixed together there doesn't really leave it in the forefront enough to bother me. But I listen to the daytrotter version a lot (which I otherwise love) and that (and other live versions) is where it grates me.
