I don't remember reading about DFW having a crush on Proust or anything, but after reading half of Swann's Way and half of TPK at the same time I find some obvious parallels.

Did you know that the Wardine chapter could be the oldest portion of IJ? Some people date it to the mid to late 1980s ('86-'88 or so).

I read that many years ago and I'm pretty sure it was a great read. It's quite different from the movie. I'll have to read it again some time.
