True. The 'popular' tracks such as By Crooked Steps & A Thousand Days Before, well, I just don't get the fuss - put them on any of the earlier albums and they'd be regarded as filler.

I don't love King Animal. I find it a bit of a chore. The lack of interesting production and a run of mid tempo tracks hurts it for me. I crave a different snare on a couple of tracks, maybe some variation onrooms and kick mic'ing, some different tones and effects and colour from the guitars. The tracks are pretty good in isolation though.

Attrition is fucking A.
Its like a lost song from SG from the LL era.

I agree with this too, and Jack Endino's production of Storm on Echo of Miles provides a good contrast; that's how a new Soundgarden album should sound.
Still, some absolute gems on there. Blood on the Valley Floor and Bones of Birds are

All of Superunknown and the back half of DOTU have such rich production, treating each song on it's own yet aware of the whole. To then have such a 2D album was a massive disappointment for me. The production, and particularly the snare sounds, are such an important aspect for me (for Soundgarden especially).

The songs from By Crooked Steps to Black Saturday are fine. Way better than any PRAMG Jam songs.
The first 2 and last ones aren't that great though. Halfway There is the worst Soundgarden song I ever heard though, and the original Cornell solo acoustic demo was nice. Don't know why they decided to change it into that awful pop song for the record.

Totally agree re Halfway There. The demo was a nice extra to throw in, but the studio version on record is completely out of place and throwaway. Positively though, A Thousand Days Before is top 10 SG material...some days it may even be close to top 5.

I don't see a huge diference in style from Halfway There to Burden In My Hand.

I agree that Halfway There doesn't really fit but it's a good song. It's stuck in my head a lot. Would have been one of the highlights on a solo album.

I like it, but it's kinda too repetitive for me. Would've been a great interlude.

rowing, eyelid's mouth, and attrition are the only songs that really stuck with me

Just gave this a complete listen through for thirst time in a long time. I liked "Eyelid's Mouth" and "Worse Dreams" better than I had remembered and "Blood On The Valley Floor" a little less. Overall, I really love King Animal. Only the bottom two songs in my rankings are kind of shitty. There are 11 good to great songs on KA. The last two minutes of "A Thousand Days Before" is as good as any music/vocal ever sounds to my ears. It's an aural orgasm. And it is one of my favorite songs by any band.
01. A Thousand Days Before
02. Taree
03. By Crooked Steps
04. Non State Actor
05. Attrition
06. Blood On The Valley Floor
07. Been Away Too Long
08. Eyelid's Mouth
09. Bones Of Birds
10. Worse Dreams
11. Rowing
12. Black Saturday
13. Halfway There

Top songs are A Thousand Days Before, Bones of Birds and Black Saturday with Blood on the Valley Floor and Taree up there too.
It gets kind of boring toward the end, though there's some cool stuff in Rowing. Been Away for Too Long and Non State Actor aren't very good except for the middle parts.

I've always enjoyed 'Rowing'.
That part around 2:45 where that heavy, sludgy, classic Soundgarden comes in followed by Kim's solo...

I adore the first batch of songs, until Taree....thats one that i cant get around. Then i love everything else including Black Saturday and Worse Dreams that seem unfinished.
I do belive that Halfway There needs to be forgotten.
