I can't help but try to convince myself he has some super human hearing ability that has aided him in his conquest of the world.

I don't think it's wrong to be more amazed about him on account of his blindness. I think about how I learned to play music, and I can't fathom trying to do it without sight. There's a video in this thread I posted a few months ago of him playing with the Stones and he's got someone leading him around stage, and for some reason that always struck me as really poignant.
