saw these bros last night and was honestly completely blown away. i thought it was gonna be a good show but they were on another level. they get into a groove and just don't let up.

Okay, saw them in denver a couple nights ago. This was my 4th time seeing them.evenslow wrote:saw these bros last night and was honestly completely blown away. i thought it was gonna be a good show but they were on another level. they get into a groove and just don't let up.
I dont know. I know why people love seeing them live but honestly I'm just not as blown away as others. They certainly are at their absolute best right now and yes, they really do know how to hit a groove and hammer away at it.
However, for me, they are just way too well rehearsed. Way too safe. No edge. Like their production and albums, every single note is perfectly written, placed, and played. Im sitting there thinking at times "well, i could have just stayed at home and listened to the album".
There are very few moments in their show where it feels like a live band really trying to take you on a journey or be a part of something. Adam is a lovely dude but not much of a dynamic character. The rest are just average white dudes standing there playing their parts perfectly like hired hands.
Under the pressure and ocean in between the waves are the two songs that really come alive during a live show.
Old Skin
Pain
An Ocean in Between the Waves
I Don’t Wanna Wait
Victim
Strangest Thing
Harmonia’s Dream
Red Eyes
Living Proof
Change
Born in Time
Ocean of Darkness
Come to the City
I Don’t Live Here Anymore
Under the Pressure
In Reverse
Eyes to the Wind
Thinking of a Place
Occasional Rain
The highlighted stretch above (other than red eyes) was a slog. I had a pretty good spot for the first bit of the show but then had to piss my brains out. I ended up not even trying to squeeze my way back in and ended up to the side close to the bar with a couple friends.
I know im supposed to gush about how incredible they are but its weird. Given their last 4.5 albums they certainly would make a run for my top 5 bands of all time but i wouldnt say seeing them live is an absolute must. They are incredible live, if you like safe, perfectly polished, exactly like the record, and just a bunch of boring white dudes standing on stage with their heads down.
The end

i'm seriously considering getting tickets to see them in Tulsa. I don't mind polished, exactly like the record shows. that's just a testament to playing to perfection.Strat wrote:Okay, saw them in denver a couple nights ago. anyway, i would love love LOVE if they played something old like I Was There or Comin' Through, but I'm guessing those are super rare if played at all.
i've never seen them before, and the show is on a weekend, so i should go for it.
also, i'm with you on getting old having to pee in a crowd.

They just announced a show in OKC this Sept! the venue is about 25 minutes from my house.
now i have to decide on driving to Tulsa (90min drive) in June or OKC in Sept.

I think I do also, but I’ve never listened to them both together in a close timeframe to compare. I know it’s close though.Chris_H_2 wrote:i still think i'm one of the few people on this planet that prefers a deeper understanding to lost in a dream.
also, both records have that "cathartic" moment for me: 5:15 of In Reverse (when the acoustic kicks in) and 6:26 of In Chains with the piano and sax finale

I wouldn’t mind the title track being 6 minutes longer.
