The reasons people hate Nickelback seem very tied to who people think they are or represent. The ideal people have seems pretty unrelated to reality.

The Nickelback hate hit that critical mass where it became a meme, so the hate became a joke in itself. But even so Nickelback really does suck.

I wasn't aware that it became a meme. I just assumed it had peaked with "Photograph", and for good reason. There's no excuse for that kind of shit.

Saying that their music conjures a certain image is not the same as saying that I think the band members themselves (or who they "represent") actually are that way. It's just a rhetorical device for explaining the music. Think of some oafish, stinking idiot -- any oafish, stinking idiot. Now imagine what that person would be if he took the form of a song. That's Nickelback's music to me. I don't know anything about the people in the band, and I don't think I've ever met a fan of their music, so I am unqualified to comment on either of those things.
