I think Black was the closest thing they had to a power ballad, at least until Sirens came along. I think Black though is missing a lot of that 70s/80s bombastic sound to truly fit the bill, however.

Why isn't Blood considered a power ballad?

Like a lot of unofficial colloquialisms, people can usually agree on about 90% of what fits the bill, and usually that 90% is enough to support the use of the reference in conversation. The other 10% of the time, it leads to bickering over an exact definition which doesn't exist. Somewhere I am sure there is a Time Life compilation that can provide all needed empirical evidence.

"November Rain" is absolutely a power ballad. It's also a triumph in melody and arrangement, and one of the prettiest songs ever written. This is coming from someone who can't stand Guns n' Roses.

What I'm saying is "power ballad" doesn't have to be a bad thing; it's just a song format that leans heavily towards the garbage side of songwriting. There are scattered gems in the heap.

I go back and forth on "Sirens".

I've never been good with labels. I was just trying to understand what people call a power ballad and why. I don't give a good goddamn what a song is labeled. If I like it, I like it -- label/genre be damned.

This may be a general comment and not directed at me at all, I just wanted to be clear that I never meant to imply otherwise.

I used to play that one all the time when I did the new wave/classic alternative night in Tampa. Never got sick of that song. I love when that dude goes "open fire!"
