Re: The Stone Temple Pilots Thread
It's a lot of hits, but I really only ever liked their first three albums (though I got them all), and they were a band where I thought their hits were usually their best songs.

Without Silvergun Superman that list makes no sense

I don't really know STP. Reading these song titles, it seems they (Weiland?) was pretty good at naming a song.

This one seems appropriate. Scott was an awesome dancer. Loved the way slid around on stage.

Re: The Stone Temple Pilots Thread
I have an incredibly hard time ranking STP songs. I actually tried to do this a month or so ago and just gave up because I really love far too many of their songs. As I remember, I had Pretty Penny last in my Purple rankings (and I really like that song) so I just fucking gave up. Here's my best shot at my STP top ten.
1. Silvergun Superman
2. Still Remains
3 - 11 (I failed again at ranking these, and I couldn't get the list down to ten)
Plush
Wicked Garden
Vasoline
Interstate Love Song
Ride The Cliché
Glide
Atlanta
Hello It's Late
Take a Load Off
And I love so many more than this group. Every song on Purple is fantastic (it's one of my all time favorite albums), they could all be included in my "favorites" list. Several songs from Tiny Music and No. 4 were right there too.

1 still remains - it's not a slow dance song, but it was the tune I picked to dance with my wife 14 years ago on our wedding day.

Re: The Stone Temple Pilots Thread
My first real exposure to STP was when Rage played the PJ unplugged set on a Saturday night in about '95? The STP unplugged followed, and it was amazing. Scott was as high as a kite but he was brilliant.
I went out and bought Purple and Core the next day. I thought those were 2 great albums, but never really got into their later ones. Scott seemed to lose his magic when doing albums/tours while trying to get sober.
He died how he lived, and I expected nothing more. RIP.

They were a fantastic fucking band, much like Pearl Jam in that the whole was much greater than the sum of its parts. Creatively, they took a lot of chances after Purple (less so on Tiny Music than on 4 and Shangri La Dee Da), and none of their albums ever sounded the same. Hell, I even enjoyed the fuck out of the reunion album on the whole, even if it was more straight up rock than the records they made before they broke up the first time.
He was a truly great frontman in an era where the idea of the "classic" rock frontman was mocked and scoffed at. Regardless of what you think of Velvet Revolver's musical output (and I'm one of the few who thinks that the second album, on the whole, is better than the first, aside from the two huge hits on Contraband), to stand up on that stage with Slash and Duff and not only NOT be overshadowed, but to grab much of the attention yourself, is remarkable.
It was easy to get disenfranchised with him because he was so talented as a performer and you just wish he'd get his shit together and you wanted to believe that he could and would do it, and he was so great that you'd want to give him chance after chance.
"generically 90s" my ass...
