That's the connection we have with these songs as we've gotten older, at least for me. Well said. I think that statement sums up why this hurts like it does even though a lot of us haven't been listening to Soundgarden much over the past several years. Those songs by those bands hitting us the way they did as teenagers cultivated a relationship with music that I have been able to carry with me throughout my life. It's evolved sure, but it's never really wavered. This loss feels really personal because of how much I appreciate being given that window.

This interview from 2007 by Howard Stern is a bit chilling. He talks about Cobain and if he had only waited 6 months maybe life would have gotten better. Also talks about his relationships with his parents/siblings. It's multi part and this is just the first part but all are on youtube. He also says Eddie is one of his closest friends and a great guy.

Nicely done, Stip. Long live Eddie and Lanegan. This is probably one of the hardest artist/celebrity deaths I've dealt with and I'm no spring chicken. Guess I didn't realize how much impact he had on my youth until something like this, so sudden so tragic so mystifying, happens.

Still mystified by his death, I've been listening to some of his youtube interviews and I don't see darkness, depression etc but as people have pointed out, you don't always see it. What a loss.

It's still very difficult to understand, I can only think there must be some other factor(s) involved that make this somewhat different to a closed-book intentional suicide. I guess that reflects what I would prefer to think, of course, but it's still quite strange and hard to believe regardless. His poor family.

No offense, but I don't understand why people keep referencing his depression. This whole event plays to me as an isolated psychotic episode brought on by the combination of an onset of some sort of chronic chemical imbalance, and an overdose of prescription medication.

Yes, and I find it particularly off-colour to dredge up lyrics he wrote twenty years ago as though they provide some insight into his thought process. There's little in his current output that reveals a tormented, depressed guy (that isn't to say that isn't what he could have been in private, but I don't think it's reflected in his work if so - and I suspect he wasn't).
