It's easily as good as the space battle in Jedi but Jedi has the edge for intercutting the tension over to Luke and the emperor and Vader

the attack by Saws people on the stormtrooper convoy. It looks like you'd imagine an attack on a convoy in the Middle East. How will that of is that playing in the US given the affinities / different sides we take in Star Wars v reality. That scene was really scary for being so realistic. Particularly the guy that runs out real low blindsiding them and throwing the bomb under the tank. That showed the really studied up for these scenes.
That scene was probably my second or third favorite in the entire film.

It was really really really well done.

That scene was devastating and a great example of what I was talking about with the very real and visceral violence in the film. There's a actual suicide bomber. And that little girl alone and screaming is so evocative of those heartbreaking images coming out of Aleppo recently. That was a really hard scene to watch. I found myself wanting to take myself out it, to look for easter eggs or something just to spot feeling what I was feeling. And it's no mistake that the images are so reminiscent of the actual real life wars in the Middle East.

Not to get too political, but my wife and I have been struggling and talking a lot about the hypocrisy of America during this election, the way we get so outraged by other countries doing the things we've been doing for so long. This movie did a good job of brushing up against hat without necessarily taking a side or making a statement. But I felt it was there. And honestly, I couldn't help but see the Empire as the US during that scene.

Good point, DcT, regarding how much better it would have been if the corridor was the only vader scene.

Gonna go see this a second time tomorrow night.

its very powerful for that obviously moving you like that. Similar discussions about that scene taking place elsewhere and it's the usual full range of polite discourse to rant Wars. I don't think it was designed to reflect or portray anything political but we're gonna project onto it or interpret it our own way.

Which scene?

Cmon. Don't play hard to get
Spoiler: show
the only scene well really remember from this film in top ten lists. VADER in the corridor
Spoiler: show

Yeah, it was pretty fucking cool. Not sure it's one of my top ten scenes in the movie, though. I'll have to think about that.

The handing off of the plans was fantastic: so tense and dramatic and even though I knew they'd succeed, I was actually worried they wouldn't. Like, to the point of physical nausea. I think that Vader specifically would have had more impact if we hadn't seen him previously (that first scene in Vader's castle (LOL!) on Mount Doom was so weird and had the only cringeworthy line in the movie for me). I would have loved the "Lord Vader will take care of them" line and all the other small seemingly throw away lines ABOUT Vader and then the first you see of him is that red light saber igniting. That would have been so fucking badass.

But, yeah, it was cool to see him move and cut folks down. Still, I was more interested in how the plans ended up with Leia than I was with Vader's violence. Still, a great scene, and a great cap to a phenomenal third act of the film.
Spoiler: show
two interesting things to that point. Lots of ppl I know are furious with that scene. 'No way should Vader have been that close to the plans and not get them!! Robs him of his power!!' (I don't buy that at all) and Gareth Edwards was one of the bodies he slaughters In that corridor.
Spoiler: show
Ooh! Fun little Easter Egg about Gareth. Didn't know that. Pretty cool way to cameo, I'd say.

Vader does enough in the original trilogy that one could argue "robs him of power" or whatever. That thought didn't cross my mind in R1. The only thing it does negatively, for me, is make we wonder why he isn't more agile against Obi-Wan later. But that's easy enough to suppose away. I did think about that though.

I guess now that we're talking about it, maybe it's weird that he doesn't Force push the guy who's obviously got something he's trying to shove through the door. Like, maybe stop throwing randos against the ceiling and nab THAT guy, Vader!

But I think that's just nitpicky.

You guys and me are in a minority. Most people wanted more Vader. I thought he was used perfectly.

The bacta tank scene is essential. The Krennic one maybe not. The final scene absolutely.

Also Peter Jackson was on set the day they filmed that scene. I'd say he loved that.

i think it adds so much to him and the whole story though. It increases the mystery about him when it really shouldn't. Seeing him just about at his most naked weakened state. What does he do in that castle? What's he like in this time in his own head and personality? I left more intrigued and excited about Vader than I have ever been.

he chose that planet! Where he killed padme! Clearly to punish himself but also cos that's where Anakin died and Vader was truly born!

I did see that, yeah. Super excited about that. I wish he'd go back and do The Force Awakens though. He kept saying he'd revisit it and expand his thoughts with some distance.

He went a fair distance on it though.

Million dollar question. Can you see yourself watching rogue one as often as you'd watch other Star Wars films?
