Wolf of Wall Street. I've watched this several times now and always struggle to "get" it. It's like, OK, so these are a bunch of greedy, depraved, debaucherous assholes, so what's the point? It's not funny, just disgusting, and it's clearly trying to be a comedy, right?

Just some good ole boys laughing, living, and loving. I don't see the problem.

I'd rather watch Jackass for something like that. This seems like a complete waste of talent.

Both give us a shared human experience of being cool and awesome, but I guess some of us just have more refined tastes than others.

What is the story in Wolf of Wall Street? Greedy, sex and drug addicted, narcissistic asshole and his cronies party a lot, break a lot of laws, get caught. Why did they make this movie and why is it 3 hours long?

Some people think these movies are morality tales, but they are really just ways of getting off.

Yes, that is my sense about it, and why I don't like it. Just watch porn instead

Brilliant movie, and you're right to be disgusted. It and American Hustle from the same year make a great pairing, they touch on many of the same themes

I liked American Hustle.

Can you please tell me what's brilliant about this?

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

As a document on a specific excessive culture from a specific time and place, I think it's extremely effective and entertaining.

Unlike American Hustle, which is lukewarm dogshit.
Do I remember correctly that you liked I heart Huckabees? Or do you dislike all O'Russell joints? I can see disliking his aesthetic, as I have a love/hate relationship with most of his stuff.

David o Russell is trash and does not understand humanity because he is a robot. He cannot get off with me.

I've been letting this marinate and OK, I can see this as justification for its existence. But I never want to experience a movie like this again. Just not for me, I suppose.
