Re: Dark Matter (song)
even outlier artists sell far fewer, i believe. which makes sense
But I still assume one of, if not the, primary motivations around legacy acts who dont need help selling tickets (how you make money in an era of minimal sales of physical media) is excitement for people to hear/discover art you made that you are proud of and want to share. Especially (as a legacy artist) new music, which speaks to your vitality and relevance in a way that simply making what you want can’t.
As a fan, I feel excited knowing pearl jam topped a chart 26 years after Yield with a song I really like

It’s kind of like seeing the team you root for make the playoffs.stip wrote:As a fan, I feel excited knowing pearl jam topped a chart 26 years after Yield with a song I really like

absolutely, unless you're explicitly denying it and insulting the intelligence of anyone who feels differently; why is this so hard for people to understand?Monkey_Driven wrote:Why would someone need to state that a post is "just their opinion"? Isn't that inferred with all posts?
this is music, not social justice

Re: Dark Matter (song)
Backspacer and Yield were both right around the 90 spot, on Billboard’s end of year sales chart for the year they came out. People were just buying a lot fewer records by 2009 (and hardly any, now).bodysnatcher wrote:Me either. But according to wiki:Kevin Davis wrote:Is it true that Gigaton hardly sold anything, and is that a number directly traceable to the pandemic? And is it a healthier market for record sales now? Genuine questions all — I don’t pay much attention to the numbers.RockPusher wrote:I think due to the pandemic, Gigaton hardly sold anything, so the band might want to at least see what they can do releasing a record in a healthier market.Kevin Davis wrote:It also seems unlikely that a well-received lead single will lead to a record-buying surge, though perhaps at this point numbers that seemed immaterial in the ‘90’s are worth chasing.
— Backspacer: 189k copies sold in first week in US. Last update was 635k sold by 2013 (4 years after release).
— Lightning Bolt: 166k sold in first week in US. No updates
— Gigaton: 63k sold in first week in US. As of March 2024, it has totaled 172k sales, 4 years later. Of note, it has the second highest number of weekly units sold on vinyl (presuming release week)
Declining album sales, yet equally as difficult to buy a concert ticket.
