Couldn't the sea captain have been a SHE captain?

Watched The Menu over the weekend - this was good fun!

Radical is a movie that seems allergic to the concept of surprises, you can see every turn coming from hundreds of miles away. And it is often cheesy and didactic (hehe). But it's shot very beautifully, with a keen directorial eye that focuses on the little corners and details that our attention temporarily clings to in real life, making the movie feel truly alive. You've watched this story a dozen times before, but the filmmaking here makes it worth watching again

May December, Todd Haynes, Netflix, Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman. Tremendous, just tremendous

The Holdovers

Pretty good! Giamatti kills it. I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, based on the genre and Christmas theme. Dare I say it was rather sweet. I must be getting old.

Burning
The Nightingale
American Woman


Burning is a Korean slow burning thriller that is 148 minutes long. It has some wonderful scenes, but also some that feel a bit like a slog. Both the beginning and the end are excellent, and you may want to see this again once it's finished. Jeon Jong-seo (who plays Hae-Mi) is brilliant here, and she steals every scene she is in. Fantastic writing and dialogue in this.

The Nightingale is a revenge story set in Tasmania. A superb, albeit harrowing drama about colonial violence, misogyny, and racism. Really something special, and has a unique feel to it throughout. It plays out like a western, and is both brutal and intense.

American Woman has a role of the year performance by Sienna Miller as its top reason why you should watch it. It's a gripping performance as a smalltown young mother / grandmother, coping with the mysterious disappearance of her teenage daughter and left to raise her grandson on her own. it's so pure and real, you almost feel like you're watching a well made documentary at times.

If I were to choose one more favorite from the movies in my post above, it would have been Wildlife.

Anniversary date last night. Got a babysitter and went to the movies. I've been to a theater twice since 2017. Once on a date for Rogue One and then again with my siblings and all of our kids for Encanto.

This time, my wife and I bought tickets for Dream Scenario. I was very glad to have enjoyed this one as a theater experience, because we definitely would have paused it or been distracted if we watched at home.

I thought the performances and the plot were great. Surreal and domestic in equal parts. Obviously the script was a hot take on social media celebrity, but it also nailed the character of a certain type of impotent male in modern times. I don't think I would have liked this movie as much if it wasn't a movie theater experience. A Nic Cage dark comedy slow burn is exactly the kind of production to remind me how great it can be to sit in a room full of people watching something unfold.

Unfortunately, I had to pee so badly in the second half that I missed the last scene. They should really consider putting bathrooms with speakers inside the individual theater rooms.

I'm sure this will come back to haunt me in my old age, but I never understood why people can't hold it for 2 hours if they go to the bathroom prior to the movie. Also, go to the bathroom prior to the movie.

I have personally never felt the need to leave the theater to pee, but every body is different. No bladdershaming please

Struggling with peeing at the movie theatre is a constant concern for me, too. I feel your pain, Reid. I always have to take it into consideration, and that usually means I don't drink anything at the movie. I snuck a canned mocha into Black Panther 2 and missed a scene near the end. I drank a Pepsi at the beginning of the last Spider-Man and missed a couple minutes of the three in the lab. It's a tough game
