I'm not a huge fan of starters coming out of the pen in the playoffs. Sure it works sometimes but baseball players (especially pitchers) are creatures of habit. I get going with your best/better arm but I agree with the masses I would have gone to Rosenthal in the 9th as well. Throwing a pitcher who had not thrown in 20 days in the biggest spot of the year was stupid.

Agreed it isn't uncommon. Still a terrible decision to go to Wacha. Go to Rosenthal there. If he has to go say 2 innings today would have been a travel day.

I said it isn't uncommon. But even if they didn't want to use Rosenthal, there were much better options than Wacha.

Had to share this crazy stat I just read....
Lenny Dykstra is 3rd all time in NL World Series home runs with 6. He only hit 81 career homers in his 12 MLB seasons. But in 32 postseason games he hit 10 and also hit .429 in the 1988 NLCS as a Met. Considering that was all pre steroid era and considering the teams he was facing (86 Red Sox, 88 Dodgers and 93 Braves & Jays) that is pretty outstanding.

Because on the road no matter what happens you have to pitch again. At home you can bring him in in the 9th inning in a tie game because maybe you have the heart of your order due up and you're pretty confident you're gonna score a run.

It basically boils down to "I can't use my best pitcher in this important situation because I need him for another important situation that may or may not arise later on."

Whatever the book says in the regular season, it's absolute lunacy to watch your club lose because you decided not to use your best option in a sudden death situation.

Got to get to tomorrow before you worry about tomorrow. In this case got to get to extras before you worry about extras.
I wouldn't of had as big of an issue with this if it would have been someone other than a pitcher who hadn't pitched in 3 weeks.

Absolutely. I'm of the opinion that managers should be making smarter decisions (especially when it comes to bullpen usage and leverage) all season long, but this was just insanity.

I understand the principal of it and don't necessarily disagree, but when it's a must win elimination playoff game it definitely dosent apply.

I may be misunderstanding what you mean here, but the "best reliever in the highest leverage situation" is even
more important when the stakes are higher.

Oh no, I'm saying matheny was in the wrong. I worded it poorly, what I meant was I can understand the idea of it in the regular season, but when your season is on the line you can't let your best reliever sit because it isn't a save situation. You have to get the lead before you worry about what to do when you have it.
