I did read that, yes. Super interesting. It was kind of a bummer that they speculate that
- Spoiler: show
- the shot of the Tie Fighter on the tower was probably never actually shot or in the movie but just a composite shot for promo purposes.
That actually made a ton of sense and I think they're probably right.
The rest of it is a great breakdown and I think they're pretty on point with their speculation. And IF they are right, I think the decisions made in the reshoots were the right decisions. I'm not sure the movie being pitched in that first trailer (again, assuming these guys are totally right) might have been a less interesting story. Though, maybe it would have been less convoluted, which others may have responded well to. I didn't find R1 to be too convoluted and I liked the sort of circular motion of the film.
It's been confirmed by multiple sources that worked on the film it really was just the ending was reshot.
But just look at that article and that has to be untrue. Look at that first trailer and all of the stuff that's cut. And it obviously wasn't cut for time. It's stuff that would not make sense in the film as it stands. I just don't buy that it was only the ending. I think other things had to change perhaps BECAUSE the ending was changed. But it's clearly more than that.

I really liked the music in this. I keep hearing reviews that point out how bad the music is. But all of them contradict themselves. "There was nothing memorable!" and then people hum or reference the sci-fi sounding music over and over again (Harloff, I'm looking at you here).
"There was no Imperial March!" ... Um... Ruddo, you've seen this thing a thousand times, do they really never pepper in The Imperial March ever once? I could have sworn a few notes where there at least once with Vader and maybe another time.
"This isn't STAR WARS ENOUGH!"
Whether or not the guy only had four and half weeks to get this thing together, Giacchio took risks and fine, maybe, there's nothing as instantly iconic as some of the stuff from A New Hope or Empire. But the same is true of Ep 2, Ep 3, Jedi and Force Awakens. And I'd say R1's score is vastly better than TFA's.
I need to see this movie again.

Saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it. In fact, I think I may put this right under Empire and ANH, and above the rest.
The corny Vader dialog and the "choke" joke was lame, but
- Spoiler: show
- seeing him in the bacta tank was pretty awesome.
The realness of it really jumped out to me. Yes, there was a lot of CGI and whatnot, but it felt more real than any other SW film out there. It certainly captured the feeling of SW too, more so than the prequels ever did. I'm looking forward to seeing this thing again, and I'm very pleased with it. I walked out of the theater totally satisfied, which is kinda odd because that seems to rarely happen with SW films (TPM, AOTC, ROTS, TFA all ranged from totally disgusted to somewhat let down).

It's fun to speculate on how people would feel about R1 and TFA if they'd been released in the opposite order. What would people think of Rogue One if it had been the first new Star Wars film in a decade? Did TFA help, or hurt, or have no affect on Rogue One?

For me, Rogue One is having an effect on TFA. As in TFA doesn't seem as good now.

It had no affect on me, because I wasn't that crazy about TFA. I really wanted to like it, I thought I would, and I really wanted to post in the thread and tell LV what an idiot he was, but it turns out that I kinda agreed with him. Having said that, TFA is at least a step up from the prequels.

They have no bearing in each other at all for me. We can't enagage in the characters as much cos it's one and done. And it's designed that way. I had a problem with the idea of standalones from the get go. And still think they should have done the new trilogy first then move onto standalones. Gives them years breathing room before whatever the ne t trilogy is.
Not really seeing any of us going back to this that often for repeat viewing. But again we won't know really for some time where this fits in and if it can settle in and feel part of the universe.

i don't think it's as bad as lv made it out to be, but still very underwhelming

yeah, that's pretty much my thoughts. i didn't flat out hate it, i just didn't really love it either. just a whole lot of meh. i think including more of the leia / political scenes would have been nice and added more to all those planets getting blown up.

Future Lucas-style cgi retcon proposal: after he says that line, he takes out a cigar case and extracts a carrot. Instantly the best Star Wars movie of all time.

Yeah, it never felt like a bunch of effects shots, in the way the ot battles never felt like effects shots. Set design details were stellar, too.

I'll have to go back and give TFA a spin. But I'm not sure I share your sentiment, friend. But that does play into what I'm talking about.

Just imagine that there had not been a new Star Wars film since RotS. Put yourself back in that place. You've had a decade of no Star Wars and no expectation that you would ever have another one again. Then Disney buys Lucasfilm. And then it's announced.... the first Star Wars film in a decade will be... Rogue One: A Star Wars story! Not a new saga film but a stand alone "prequel" that ties into A New Hope.
You don't think that would have affected your expectations or experience with Rogue One at all?
Then a year after the release of Rogue One you get a new saga film, Episode 7: The Force Awakens. You don't think your opinion (whether positive or negative) would have been different? You don't think Rogue One's having come out just a year before would have changed the way you viewed TFA?
Maybe not, I wonder if TFA hadn't been responsible for the legacy, hadn't had to do all the heavy lifting, if people would have been a little harder on the film. We're already seeing people step back from the broad praise it received when it opened. Like, Ruddo said just a few comments ago. R1 made TFA less interesting, less "good" to him. If they had been released in the opposite order, I wonder if that would be greater or lesser than what he's experiencing now.
None of this matters, just interesting to think about. Well, interesting for me to think about. I'm sure few others really care.

If R1 had. One first it wouldn't have been the success force awakens was. Probably not as successful at looks like it's going to be now. So if force awakens had come after, and exactly as it stands I think it would have been the avatar effect. People slow to engage but slowly building and on to probably be an even bigger success than it is in this 'timeframe'. Cos it's such an exciting and engaging and fun Star Wars film. They probably missed a trick not releasing rogue first if I think on it.

i read an article yesterday that likened R1 to one of the extended universe stories of old, with all the good and bad that this entails, wheras TFA is a much more tradition star wars film in the classic sense (again with all the good abd bad this entails)
