Re: What movies are you watching?
People were really laughing in the theatre, though. They loved it. But I found the "jokes" to be cruel-hearted or childish. One of the biggest laughs was when some guy tripped. Most of the laughs just came from Emma Stone acting like a non-verbal autistic person, which sincerely is not funny. I think maybe it just looks and is paced weird so people don't know how to react to it and laugh at anything? The Argonaut wrote:I'm liking it less as I think about it. "It won me over a bit by the end" because the bar was so low. I wasn't tearing my hair out and thinking of leaving at the end, but that's about it. But I'm having trouble identifying even in the end anything that I appreciated or found insightful or interesting or anything. It's mostly just shallow and sillyThe Argonaut wrote:I did not really enjoy Poor Things. It won me over a bit by the end, but it was an uphill battle after a nearly insufferable first hour or so. The main problem may be that I seem to find Emma Stone entirely without charm, perhaps a personal failing.
But it does also kind of make me sad to see Yorgos Lanthimos basically doing Jean-Pierre Jeunet, especially since I don't really like Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
It's not for me
Just garbage really
yeah, fuck this movie

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Damn. And here I am reserving a spot for Poor Things at the top of my year end list.
I'm still very hopeful, since I, for one, find Emma Stone delightful.

I like her quite a bit in The Curse. Very talented and charismatic, for sure. I can definitely think of many lesser actours and actoursses.

I did not like Lobster but liked Killing of Sacred Deer quite a bit, but part of me hated it. Is the Favourite any good?

It's not my favourite of his (that would probably be The Lobster), but I really liked it.tree_ wrote:Is the Favourite any good?
