Yep! This was my thoughts when I heard the song for the first time and my opinion hasn’t changed since. I’m almost certain these lyrics are about V. Cornell.

I think it's generally safe to assume that a 57 year old musician, generally known for his empathy and decency, is not engaging in a flame war with the widow of a dear friend and mother of that friend's children.

Given how Vicky Cornell reacted post-Chris' death, specifically what she said about Eddie, I am inclined to believe this interpretation. Comes Then Goes had less vitriol but is thematically similar. I do not think this is all a coincidence. And then we have Brother The Cloud on the same album. Nope, not a coincidence.

Ed hasn't talked that much about Chris directly so just letting his emotions out through his music and lyrics is probably his only real outlet.

if this is about Vicky then what does the title of the song mean? I keep getting stuck on this

Vicky has the "reservation of rights" of everything that once belonged to Chris. She claimed the Soundgarden social media, songs, demos, etc, she has the power of rights!

comes than goes was a meditative, lyrical grappling with the complex death of a loved one. She would be a part of that story, possibly (we are still assuming)

This is just rock star punching down and ragging on your friends wife. If this is true, and I dont think it is, it would be unbelievably disappointing.

and would be an unprecedented act of misogyny on Eddie’s part

Point to the part that’s misogynistic

Ugh. See? Now your next headline is going to be “Eddie Vedder Writes Angry Screed About Chris Cornell Relative” on alternative nation, with a quote “that’s some serious vitriol” quoted Warehouse on the Red Mosquito Forum.

He doesn't explicitly say it is about Vicky though, it's left to the interpretation of the listener. He won't even say BTC is about Chris in unequivocal terms but the way he talked about how that song was waiting to come out of him because there were some unresolved feelings, I think the same applies here. Feeling a certain way and justifying it are two different things. He felt angry at his friend too. He has no love lost with Vicky and perhaps considers her as the reason why he and Chris were not in touch for the last few years. Then the things Vicky and her mother said about Ed. It ties in quite well for me personally. Then there is also the fact that Ed said a song may come from something real but then he may exaggerate/expand on that story.

she was upset EV didn't attend the funeral from what i remember. i know there were issues w/ soundgarden and letting them use stuff he had recorded. i also just assumed the whole scene was friendlier with his first wife and I think ed's kids are friendly with cornell's first kid.

the 'burning gasoline' lyric reminds me of 'rusty cage'. i dunno, EV must really hate this lady if this song is about cornell.

wealthy famous male rock star writes big swinging screed about how friends shrewish wife is responsible for ruining his life, blaming her for his choices

this is a familiar, ugly, toxic trope. And it would be both wildly out of character and beyond petty if true. Obviously I cant say definitvely if it is or isnt.
