Not really seeing any of us going back to this that often for repeat viewing. But again we won't know really for some time where this fits in and if it can settle in and feel part of the universe.
Just imagine that there had not been a new Star Wars film since RotS. Put yourself back in that place. You've had a decade of no Star Wars and no expectation that you would ever have another one again. Then Disney buys Lucasfilm. And then it's announced.... the first Star Wars film in a decade will be... Rogue One: A Star Wars story! Not a new saga film but a stand alone "prequel" that ties into A New Hope.

You don't think that would have affected your expectations or experience with Rogue One at all?

Then a year after the release of Rogue One you get a new saga film, Episode 7: The Force Awakens. You don't think your opinion (whether positive or negative) would have been different? You don't think Rogue One's having come out just a year before would have changed the way you viewed TFA?

Maybe not, I wonder if TFA hadn't been responsible for the legacy, hadn't had to do all the heavy lifting, if people would have been a little harder on the film. We're already seeing people step back from the broad praise it received when it opened. Like, Ruddo said just a few comments ago. R1 made TFA less interesting, less "good" to him. If they had been released in the opposite order, I wonder if that would be greater or lesser than what he's experiencing now.

None of this matters, just interesting to think about. Well, interesting for me to think about. I'm sure few others really care.
to your point, every star wars film for years will be capitalizing on the good will TFA generated

Something else I've noticed. Its interesting seeing not just here but elsewhere that the people really taken with R1 are also fascinated by the reshoots and what 'might have been'.
Strange.

Completely agree. In much the same way people always say empire is their favourite. But you can't have empire without a new hope.

Absolutely. Which is part of why I think that movie was not only so fucking good but also so necessary, even in it's repetition of themes.

that's been my thought as well. The EU was interesting but now we're getting an EU that will be taken care of by people who know wtf they're doing like JJ and Gareth and Riann. I'm excited, and I trust Disney not to get too lost in the woods the way the books did.

This makes me crazy (lettering is mine for ease of rebuttal):
Nothing in this movie makes any sense.

A)If Galen Erso needed to be kidnapped because they couldn’t finish the Death Star without him, why does he tell Jyn in his message the only reason he stayed was because he knew they would finish it without him anyway?

B)If the Rebel Alliance is willing to shoot an informant in the back and break Jyn out of jail and risk a mission to Jeddah to get this defected pilot from Saw, why do they suddenly not care what Jyn or the pilot have to say? Suddenly they’re like…”meh. Nevermind.”

C)So Tarkin isn’t the guy who spearheaded the Death Star now? He stole it from Krennic? So now Tarkin is just a dipshit who took credit for someone else’s work? Why rewrite the original trilogy like that?

D)Kyber Crystals power the Death Star???? So it’s a giant lightsaber?

E)Why did Saw need a Truth-octopus when he had a message from his oldest friend on a hologram?

F)Why didn’t Galen give the pilot the plans instead of a hologram explaining the plans?

G)Why are the Death Star plans not kept on the actual fucking death star? Or in several locations?

H)If Rebels are attacking your base because they want to steal the Death Star plans, step one would be deleting the Death Star plans right? Even if you don’t have a backup, you delete it before they get the plans.

I)Why is Galen and a whole team of engineers working on some remote planet instead of on the actual Death Star?

J)Why couldn’t the Rebel Alliance stop the attack on the platform? They said the pilots had already started the engagement? So what? Use the comms and tell them to stop! Clearly communications can make it from that planet to Rebel Command.

K)If the Death Star plans are so big of a file that it needs to be stored in a giant data center, and needs a huge dish to broadcast it, how does it fit on a 2x4 key-card that can be inserted into an R2 unit? Is Alliance compression technology that much more advanced that the Imperials have?

L)If you can communicate with people outside the shield to tell them to destroy the shield, just send the data through that connection. Right?

M)How did Vader know that the plans had made it onto that Corvette? How did he know that the plans had been absconded at all? The Force? Was it the Force?
A) Because, as he said in the hologram, with him on the job he built in the weakness.

B) I mean, it wasn't the Rebellion who hated the pilot and Jyn, it was the two guys they picked up.

C) I don't feel like this was really explained in the OT so...what?

D) No? The crystals have been used in weapons not called lightsabers for awhile.

E) "Hey, Saw, Buddy, I'm going to send someone and his exact name is Bodhie S. StarPilot. Got it?" I missed that part of the message, I guess.

F) Seriously. The plans were on an entirely different planet at that point.

G) They probably are, who says they aren't? As I learned yesterday: You can't prove a negative so you can't say they aren't somewhere you don't know they aren't.

H) Because they didn't know why they were there? It was Tarkin who figured that out, not the guys on the planet. And he wanted to blow the fucker up so it's not like he called ahead.

I) Dude, work-at-home and work-life balance is huge in the Empire. Kids and farming, not so much.

J) I'll give you this one, but only because the movie more or less tells you on every other communication that they happen without worrying about how slow the information travels and yet for this one attack they're all, "it's too late!"

K) 1) you don't know how big the file actually is on the HDD, maybe it was only part of it and the Rebels also stole the lunch menu for Palpatine's coming visit?
2) the Rebels probably have bespoke technologies because of their size, so maybe? Also, it could be a Blu-Ray and hold 50GB of information.

L) I feel like Rocket talking to Baby Groot. NO, it doesn't work that way. They said so a couple times!

M) I don't think he was there because of the plans, he was there to fuck shit up. Did you not see him fucking shit up?

It's like he wasn't paying attention at all.

For myself, I'm just always interested in that kind of stuff. Not just with Rogue One but will all movies/shows. I love the history of these things, the process, and how they come together. I haven't even seen Suicide Squad but I feel the same about that. Or even something like LOST where the show runners talked SUPER openly about corrections and path changes they made along the way. That stuff is just really interesting to me.

I want to know what made Saw Garrera say, "What will you become." That whole speech seemed interesting to me and I wonder how it played into the overall structure and narrative arc of the original version.

Rogue one is at $420million globally. In a week. That will double over the holiday I reckon.
It was pass out force awakens but it'll get up there.

I reached semantic satiation of the word "take" about 1/4 of the way down the page.

Also that part about the Bothans makes me want the movie where they find DSII. Like, some Bothans are on vacation and they make a left by Endor and suddenly a "that's no moon!" Abbot & Costello who's-on-first routine breaks out and the Empire shoots at them and they barely make it to the Rebel base and die of dysentery or something.

WTF is a Bothan, anyway. *google image search* Oh, so furries. Great.

This is a beautiful movie. It has style, personality, vision, depth, tactility, even audacity. Aside from the few annoying bits of nostalgia pandering, I loved it. It's Edwards through and through. And it feels so much dirtier and riskier than any other SW movie.
