My brother has a 4K TV and it's a very strange experience with how high def it is. We watched movies at his house on Christmas and it made me feel like I was drunk, if that makes any sense. Like shit was waaaaay too real.

Hey ST, tell you brother to turn off motion smoothing.

Since we're talking about TVs now...mine has this weird effect sometimes where it's like certain parts of the screen move faster than others. For example, a forehead moves faster than the rest of the actors head making a weird ghosting effect. I've turned everything off but can't figure out for the life of me what the hell's going on.

On top of that, depending on what I'm watching (Plex, Amazon Video, Netflix, Hulu) the effect is stronger or weaker. The only way I get absolutely zero of this is if I plug a USB in and watch that way. But I can't pirate everything, can I.

Does it happen with all shows, or just older shows/movies that may have been filmed in 4:3 aspect ratio?

Is it LED?

All shows and movies. And I think it's LED, yes. I bought it in 2010 and it's a Samsung.

LEDs, especially older models, often suffer from that issue. I believe it has to do with the refresh rate. Unfortunately, it's a tech issue that you can't really do anything about.

There's a special place for people who don't turn that soap opera effect off.

It took me awhile to find the right calibration settings for my new TV but I found a really nice picture. 4k and 1080p stuff looks incredible on it. PS4 games look and play great on it.

So what you're saying is it's time to play "catch the brick" in my living room and see what happens.

I can barely play first person shooters now without getting sick, if the new tech makes that worse, I might have to retire from games for good.

yeah. It's a lot worse in games where the depth of field is off. Half Life 2 made me throw up. i thought i was crazy, but apparently other people had the same problem.

I was playing a few nights ago, and right as I hit the 2-hour mark I got an extreme case of motion sickness. Doesn't happen often, but after a long day spreadsheeting, I guess my eyes had enough.

I don't think I've ever had motion sickness playing games, but I've definitely gone way too long playing without blinking enough. My eyes will burn like crazy sometimes. I rarely play longer than an hour or two at a time though.

I'm a little nervous that VR will make me nauseous. Has anyone played a VR game?

I played AVR game at the mall in St. Louis around 1990. I did not get nauseous.
