Dylan out despite playing with a number of bands over the years because. Bruce out because he was the driving force behind his band and his name is up front (basically same with Pearl Jam for 30 of the 32 years they existed but we’ll count them because they are not called Eddie and the Pearl Jams).
What Bob Dylan band ranks amongst the best American bands ever?
You could argue The Band, whose recording output was in upstate New York and who also recorded there while Dylan was holed up after his motorcycle accident.

I do think more attention should be placed on the Grateful Dead as the greatest American band. They lead an entire musical movement out of San Francisco in the mid to late 60s, a movement that has evolved and been reshaped both with the remaining living members and in other bands who have taken slices of their sound and built entire careers around them - some of which still fill arenas and stadiums in the US regularly. While they don’t have an extensive list of #1 hits, many of their songs are baked (pun intended) into the consciousness of American music history. They’ve also spawned an unbelievably rich amount of bands who exist just to play their music, and recently had a music festival devoted to that (Skull & Roses in Ventura, CA).
Jefferson Airplane > Grateful Dead
Jefferson Airplane is a profound waste of Grace Slick’s wonderful voice. Once it all fell apart and they built this city on rock n roll, they were eliminated from contention.

I agree they aren’t in contention but “We Built This City” isn’t a Jefferson Airplane song.

…there’s no way The Beach Boys pass the test
Performed entirely under Wilson’s direction. The WC were in awe of him. The Beach Boys were a universally loved hit machine and the best harmonizers ever. The strength of their talents far outweigh the shortcomings they had as instrumental players.

Good reminder that both The Wrecking Crew and the Funk Brothers deserve mentioning of some kind in the conversation.

My personal belief is that the White Rabbit was the absolute pinnacle of creation by Jefferson Airplane to the heights of which they'd never even come close neither prior to writing it nor at any later stage of their existence as a band.

This would be correct. White Rabbit is really good. The rest I just haven’t been able to ever get into.

so we've got: E St Band, Heartbreakers, CCR, Alman Bros, REM, Talking Heads (i think), Beach Boys, The Doors and Toad the Wet Sprocket all battling for second. this is a great list.

The Band is Canadian or they would be #1. I would try to shoehorn DMB in the convo but dave was born and went to HS in south africa i think. The White Stripes could be in this conversation.

Looking at this list I'm reminded rock has been exhausted as genre.

The Beach Boys are a rock band. They are a totally valid entry into this discussion. I just don't think they're it.

Starship.
Which is why it isn’t taken into consideration when assessing the JA.

I agree White Rabbit is the high water mark. Surrealistic Pillow (the album w/ White Rabbit and Somebody to Love) is by far their best. Their other albums aren’t consistent but “Jefferson Airplane Takes Off” (pre Grace Slick) “After Bathing at Baxters” and “Volunteers” all have really good songs on them. Paul Katner co-wrote Wooden Ships w/ David Crosby and Stephen Stills. The JA version on Volunteers is much better than the CS&N recording imo.
