It's not easy being a huge fan of such a huge band with such an awful fan club, which has no idea how to stagger news in anything approaching an interesting way.

Well almost 200 pages since July. Lord knows what the page count will be by release day.
We're talking ourselves out of liking it

That's only possible if you were predisposed to liking it, which I'm guessing is not most of us. My default setting is 'meh' about Pearl Jam these days, so the only way is up.

I've been listening to everything pre-and-including-Riot Act a lot on holiday this week, and realising how far they've fallen in terms of quality in the space of two albums. I'm hoping LB begins the climb upwards again but I'm not holding my breath.

The only hope I have in LB at this point is that soundchecked song. I still think it sounds cool as hell and will probably be good on the record. Lightning Bolt itself is some potential in someways but just doesn't work out, and Future Days... well.. it's like Just Breathe but worse.

Jeff will quit soon and they'll get BoB on bass for an album. You watch.

Except we won't get a cool, honest documentary out of it. They'll just pretend they're proud of it and the fans are wrong for hating it.

Well, diminishing interest from TheJambi is pretty much the death knell for Lightning Bolt.
Let's pack 'er up and go home, guy.

Does it really matter, though?
Maybe there's no plan towards some sense of escalating excitement, it's more like "hey, we've got a new record coming out in a few months, so, uh, yeah, we hope you like it."
If fans of the band think "oh, neat, I'll have to remember to pick that up in October" and go on with their lives, they've probably achieved all they set out to do.
Not everything needs to be some life-affirming event.

No, I think you're completely right. We all know how I felt about the Backspacer promotion. I like that it looks like they are doing nothing like that this time around. It's just that excitement is dying down at the moment, some of which is to do with the quality of the two new songs. But that's to be expected and is fine. It'll be the same album when it's released weather I'm excited two months before its release or not.

my excitement was pretty high when people were talking about the concept album idea a couple of weeks ago.
but really im excited to hear what they have done, i really like MYM, i like LB pretty well from what ive heard of it from the live track, and i think FD is a good song that will hopefully be improved on in the studio, so i think it will be a good album.

Reasons to be optimistic:
1) PJ never release their best songs as singles.
2) MYM is a pretty cool song, in which the band doesn't really show up and play, but at least that might be the nature of this song as opposed to the others (punk, i.e. simple)
3) No song we've heard has been terrible, not even Future Days.
4) The soundcheck song. It has a real possibility of being awesome.
5) Brendan O'Brien didn't seem very excited about this album.
6) The artwork is awesome and I hope suggests some well thought-through themes and concepts.
7) The rumoured reworked uke song could be really great.
8) If this album isn't good we can pack up and go home.
9) Something else.

if for some reason the album as a whole isnt great ( i think it will be though ) then i know we will get a few really good songs that will be good to add to the setlists and playlists until the next album comes out. i dont know if any band or artist has gone a whole career with out an album or 2 that wasnt on par with the rest of their catalog, but to me we still have 7 amazing albums, 2 very good albums and what ever this one ends up being.
