I wonder if Rian asked for BB8 to be swapped with R2 so that he could have R2 be carrying Luke's lightsaber? To either hide it from Kylo or just in case of ________. If R2 shoots it at him during some battle it would be one call back I wouldn't have a problem with.

Those new ships scraping up all that red dust heading towards the walkers, perhaps the dust is combustible or even explosive? It'd help take those walkers out maybe?

they could have just as easily given bb8 that power if they needed it

BB8 is Poe's droid. R2 is Luke's. It makes all the sense in the world for R2 to reunite with Luke. I'm glad Rian made this happen. JJ's having BB8 in that scene was a huge misstep. I have all the faith in the world in Rian Johnson. At this point -- and maybe I'm just setting myself up for massive failure but -- if The Last Jedi is hands down the best Star Wars film to date, I'm going to call it a failure.
