I don't even think it's close. The Band is probably the most underrated rock group ever. They are closer to Led Zeppelin and The Beatles than they are to any of the bands we mentioned in here.

I mean, I like The Last Waltz as much as the next guy, but that's an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.

I would bet that if you asked random folks on the street to name three songs by The Band, less than 1 in 20 could do it. That doesn’t mean they are not the right answer, but lasting cultural impact is relevant as the same question asked about Aerosmith would probably be closer to 1 on 5.

My diatribe about the Band is thus: I think among the most talented bands ever because they had both amazing songcraft, at least in their best albums, and were all great players who truly served the whole. I just know of a collection of rock players that sound so organically good together as them in their heyday. As a collective, they are hard to top. Are there bands and such that I personally prefer more? Yes, but they always will be in the conversation to me.

you're all proving my point about The Band being underrated. they are as musically talented as almost anyone and have written some of the best and most influential songs in rock history.

Who wants to be the one to tell warehouse that being underrated doesn't make you the greatest American rock band of all time? I can do it if no one else wants to.

What are some of The Band's other big hits that I might recognize? I can't think of anything except The Weight.

I am guessing that if you made that a playlist, probably 75% of those would be either “oh yeah! I know this one…” or “they play that?”
