What movies are you watching?

Reality. Whoa! Surprised by this. I really liked it. Sweeney is so good! Two things going against it:
- the whole "sticking to the transcripts down to every stutter and half-started sentence" approach never makes for natural-sounding dialogue, but you get past it
- it goes way overboard with the ending montage

But overall super gripping. A tight 80 minutes, too. Well done

Netflix..watched The Greatest Night In Pop today...a doc about the making of We are the World..pretty good stuff in there..Dylan was quite uncomfortable for awhile and I think Waylon walked out when Stevie Wonder wanted to sing a verse or 2 in Swahili...worth the watch

I expected a lot of things from it and the movie mostly meets expectations. One thing I did not expect was how utterly boring and lifeless it was. I don't mind a long movie but this thing felt twice as long as it is. It's such a compelling story. How is this movie so dull? There's zero tension. The storytelling choices at times are nonsensical and sporadic.

Leo is fucking great, though. Bizarre that he didn't nominated for an Oscar.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

What do you mean by sporadic here?

There's some jumping around that doesn't totally track, for me. Like telling a story in a scene. And then having two or three scenes happen. And then showing the flashback of the thing we just heard about a few scenes ago. Feels structurally sporadic.

Lot's of great Westerns in the last few weeks. True Grit and Liberty Valance were standouts. Liberty Valance is probably the best performance I've seen from John Wayne and I'm always happy to see Jimmy Stewart.

How the West was Won was a fun ride. It contained some of the most beautiful wide shots I've seen in any movie.

The Planet of the Apes were a mixed bag, but I am happy to have seen them. 1, 3 and 5 were the best ones, in my opinion.

Charley Varrick was a good watch. I read that it was written for Clint Eastwood, but he turned it down. It really shows - watching Water Mathau try to be sexy was funny.

The Parallax View was another very entertaining 70s thriller. Good story and performances, and some really cool cinematography.


Tonight I'm going to watch the 2010 True Grit.

I should also say the His Girl Friday was a real treat. I wasn't really expecting a 40s comedy to be so funny. I really love Cary Grant.

They're a mixed bag. I think the second is maybe the worst. There are some really awful effects in the movie and they spend the whole first half of the movie establishing a new main character because Heston didn't want to be in it (he is, but in a small role).

The third is the best sequel and the 4th and 5th are pretty good.

I'd say they're worth watching if you enjoyed the first one.
