i would put him in the boat of Mularky(sp?), Rex Ryan, and Jason Garrett, if they think they find a better option then they might make the move, but they werent ready to make the move and hope to get a certain coach.

Yeah, I agree. Half of me wants to put the Lions discipline issues squarely on Schwartz. The other half is yelling, "Marvin Lewis".

Because of where they came from, frankly. If they had been 6-10 4 years ago, sure. But they were 0-16. Last year was a flash in the pan that probably made them overvalue some of their own guys because they were so ahead of schedule, so they thought they could go the depth route (reiff, broyles, etc) in the draft. It was not a good offseason last year, and this season was horrific as well. But realistically, they were probably not making the playoffs this year anyway- and that was before Minnesota was infinitely better than expected. 4-12, 6-10, 8-8... who cares if you dont make the playoffs anyway. Obviously a better record is preferable, but it's not like they were prohibitive favorites.

and I am not a huge fan of making change just to say you made one. Same view I have on Joe Dumars... fine, say you want to fire him.. but give me a replacement that you are confident will be better. Especially if it means switching systems, schemes, playbooks and personnel all over again.

i heard about this this morning and is apparently the hot topic for today, if its a real tattoo then i got back to the , if its some kinda temporary tattoo to try and be funny then ill switch to cuz no matter what, that dude just doesnt no how to act like a normal adult.

I'm very unhappy that it looks like Andy Reid is going to be the new coach there. I was fearing that he was going to end up in the division with the Chargers, since he's an LA native, but I never thought the Chiefs would be in play. Congrats if that's the case, he could turn that team around quickly just like Martyball did in the 90s.

what are the feelings on what Andy will do for a QB? draft 1 at #1 over all, maybe a 2nd rounder he could be eyeing that could start from day one, or would Alex Smith be someone he might wanna go for? and what might Alex Smith Cost in a trade? they fact that he is not going to start again would make you think SF might not get as much value, but i wouldnt be surprised if Harbaugh is looking for a large ransom for him

I haven't read any news about who the Bears are considering. But, I would be a happy man if they could convince Bill Cowher to come back to the NFL. Just seems like a real longshot, the guy's really happy with his life right now.

I haven't read any news about who the Bears are considering. But, I would be a happy man if they could convince Bill Cowher to come back to the NFL. Just seems like a real longshot, the guy's really happy with his life right now.

The talk on NYC sportsradio has been Cowher to the Jets...assuming they decide to pull the plug on Rex. Just doesn't seem likely that either scenario will happen though.

What I find much troubling for the Jets is the rumor that whoever the next GM is will be mandated to keep Rex as the coach for a year. Honestly, I think it would have been better for Rex if he got fired this year. Given the problems that I noted in the very first post of this thread, the Jets could be set up for major failure in 2013--and it could be better for Rex if he jumps ship before it truly sinks.

That was four years ago. In the NFL, more than in any other sport, you can go from last to first in the blink of an eye. And you're forgetting, that Mayhew was a part of the management team that put that 0-16 team together. So you can't say it takes time to overhaul an entire team when that team is your responsibility to begin with.

And that's kind of my point. Agreeing that last year among the last four was the outlier, you really don't have much to hang your hat on, particularly when you're trending downward and the rest of the division is going (or is in) in the opposite direction.

Also, last year they just weren't as good as their record (or as people wanted them to be). Don't forget, they came back from at least a 13-point deficit in the second half in four games (and 20 points in two). A four-game swing puts them at 6-10 (which is still two games better than this year).

Perfect example of a failure or inability to evaluate your own players: relying on Javid Best when the guy is one more concussion away from being on the same wave length as Muhammad Ali.

I think most people expect them to either plateau or continue the upword swing, not represent a bell curve after a playoff appearance.

I don't think anyone suggests making a change just for the sake of it. The fact is, Mayhew is a Millen protige that is responsible for virtually everyone on the current roster. If you overvalue as you suggest, that means you don't have the ability to evaluate your own talent. If you're the architect of a team that is already inching downward after a maverick playoff season, then that's the sign of a trend. Sitting idly by because the talent pool at GM is thin is just delaying the inevitable and pushing you back yet another year. Plus, who's to suggest that the talent out there wouldn't turn into the next Ron Wolf?
