Mike's solo at about 1:31. :luv:
Awesome version. One of the best solos I've in a long time (from Mike).
Yeah I have a really good audience recording of this I'll upload the song to this thread when I get home.

Is a link in the live section? I've been meaning to grab one or two of these shows.

Cool. I think that's what I mistakenly meant. Fool. Cheers dude, you saw a great version.

I'm almost in this hyperbolic camp. This song is as close to perfect as it gets.

It's interesting how a song that doesn't have any of what most people here consider interesting song writing properties is rated 5 stars by 42 out of 45 people.
Not much of a decent riff, rather average music and melody, standard structure, a solo that for the most part follows the verse melody, very common time signature and yet....

The melody in this one is sublime.

The tone of eds guitar is absolutely perfect. Slightly overdriven tube amp. Is there a touch of tremolo in there? Anywho, provides the perfect haunting back drop.

On it's own it isn't but it works within the song. I think it's clear what my post is about. I think that what many if not the majority here most stubbornly argue makes a great song and is strong song writing isn't even mirrored in their own taste let alone works as a general rule.

I think this song is an example of great songwriting and arranging music because it evokes the mood of the lyrics without trying hard or exaggerating any aspect of it which seems to be what most of PJ doesn't really "get" and is happy to have left behind.

Everything is done well. Everything is balanced. Every part is performed honestly. Nothing is too simple or is trying too hard.

The song is just perfect.

I absolutely think the melody in this song is a beautiful one on its own, possibly the best pure melody of the band's first few albums (when Ed depended more on inflection, rhythm, and delivery than actual melody). This one is fantastic. You can actually sit down at a piano and play it and it's still engaging, unlike a lot of other early songs of theirs.

I agree when put like this. I remember people here arguing their earlier songs where more melodic which made me wonder what people mean by that.

I don't know why, but I never think of this when considering what the all time classic PJ songs are, even though it undoubtedly is for me. It's a fantastic piece of writing, but it sometimes slides under my radar. I forget how good it is until I hear it again.
