This couple is sitting way too close to me at the bar right now. I ordered to-go, so luckily there’s no risk of eye-fucking. However, I feel violated aurally. They’re sitting around and randomly telling each other current events, like this is some sort of weekend news roundup. I should add that they look like they are in their mid-60s.

What is the etiquette for when you wander into a new dive and the regulars take a shine to you enough to buy you a beer? You’re just there to have a quick one on the way home while waiting on some burgers to go and don’t have any intention of getting a buzz, but you don’t want to be rude. Are you obligated to stay for a few more? Buy them one in reciprocity? Just enjoy the gesture and head out?

I totally did this a couple weeks ago and the sammich I ended up ordering was awesome.
