And like Dark Side of the Moon, it blew up in part because its production outperformed the supposed technical revolution it was trying to take advantage of. It sounded a lot better than most of the records being pushed as innovators.

I would argue no. Nirvana was more popular throughout the world 1991-1994.

PJ went through the whole Ticketmaster / difficulty touring normal venues thing...

And then Hootie & The Blowfish hit the scene in ‘95.

I think it's safe to say that in 1993-1994 Pearl Jam was the biggest rock band in America. The world is tough. If you told me it's still u2 I'd probably believe you.
