I see how Vs fulfills the first criteria but not the second.

Vs is a far different record than Ten.

maybe but I'm not sure how the opening bars of that record communicate that

also, if No Code doesn't count, then I'm really not sure how Vs does

What does that little opening, warmup jam remind you of on Ten?

what I'm saying is that there's nothing in the first track at all that leads me to believe this band is heading in a brand new direction

if we're going to say that No Code is the "logical extension" of Vitalogy, especially based on the first few bars of the first song, then I don't see how anyone can argue differently for Vs. What about the first few bars of Go tells you this is a band heading in a new direction? that VS isn't a "logical extension" of ten?

It sounds nothing like the previous album. Wouldn’t that indicate new direction and growth?

you're gonna have a slightly easier job arguing that the uncut noodling before Go that starts off the record is vastly different from Master/Slave than you are arguing that Go sounds like a song by a different band than the one that made Ten

Nick Drake: Pink Moon.

Gone is the baroque pop, jazzy instrumentation and pastoral imagery of the first two albums. All we’re left with is bleak yet beautiful guitar chords and that unmistakable voice for that final album. He’d go on to take his life less than two years later.
