There's no denying Clapton's prowess on the guitar and yeah, he's certainly written several classics. I've always felt that EC's at his best when he's been part of a group though, and not on his own. Had history gone down differently, I think this would have made a pretty amazing band:
Jimi Hendrix - Guitar/Vocals
Eric Clapton - Guitar/Vocals
Billy Cox - Bass
Mitch Mitchell - Drums
Steve Winwood - Keys/Vocals

I never said he couldn’t have shitty songs. Or be overrated.

For real, though. Clapton sucks.
He's awful. So fucking overrated.
Jesus Christ, Strat
Cool he wrote layla. Great. NEXT
So you’re seriously telling me Clapton isn’t a great guitar player?
He's fine. There are far more interesting players out there.
Now that I can agree with.

When Clapton has the fire, he’s amongst the best that’s played. Longevity has been his biggest bane. You can’t exist in any field without having lows and mediocre moments. He’s had a lot of those thru the almost 60 years he’s been a public name. And the likelihood of him having that fire again is pretty much nil. He’s around 75 with neurological issues where his hands go numb. But when he had his heights, he was at the top. The best ever? No. Amongst the best? Certainly.

i am not a Clapton archivist, but Cream strikes me as among the top rock bands of all time and Clapton Unplugged is an exceptional performance
probably overrated but he is in the Lamborghini / Ferrari class while PJ is down in Chevy Malibu territory.
for those calibrating at home The Who are somewhere around a Buick

Pretty much anything from the Bluesbreakers and Cream. From 85-91 live, he was on it. The Unplugged album is great, but you probably hate it. When I saw him in 2010, he had a couple of moments that really seemed like he still had it down deep, but that's about the end of it. When he had Derek Trucks playing with him in 2007-08, he played pretty tight, but I listened more for Derek than Clapton. If you had the time and inclination, you should watch the entire row sets he played with the Allman Brothers back in '09. Those are two of the best sets he's ever played and you also get Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks.

Eric Clapton's voice is ordinary and his guitar playing is equally run of the mill.
For as famous as he is, I've never heard anything extraordinary in what he's done.
Wait , I do like bell-bottomed blues, and badge, and anyone for tennis . Oh and Pretending (if that's even the name)
Did he write those?
If, yes, I'll give him that but that's it.
How he got so famous , I have no idea

He's a great guitar player, and Cream is a legendary band. Him and George Harrison were best friends from way back in the Beatles days, and Clapton influenced the Beatles through Harrison.
