Well, I found that Parkland joke to be hilarious and correct. He's not making fun of the victims, he's calling out the incorrect perspective that being a survivor inherently provides you with anything special to offer on the political issue.

Personal experience is not a bad start in a political matter. Being engaged in and caring about a subject, is even more important.

The Parkland jokes were juvenile, offensive, entirely unfunny, and stupid as hell. BUT the thing to remember is that it was not part of some polished Louis special. It was leaked, not put out by Louis. That's how comedians develop stuff, in front of an audience. When you're alone, something might seem funny and appropriate, but then you say it to an audience and it makes you feel bad or you get a bad reaction and you realize and adjust. I am 100% positive that most of the introspective, brilliant jokes we know from Louis's specials started out as juvenile, raunchy jokes that he developed into something meaningful over time by working them out in front of audiences. This Parkland shit is maybe something he would've abandoned and never included in a special in any form. It's a little unfair to criticize and compare a leaked set to a polished special.

Making a joke saying the only reason a kid lived thru that is because they pushed a fat kid out of the way is wrong on every level. It totally discounts and dismisses the horror that those kids and their parents went thru. Polished special or not, it’s just wrong. He sure as shit wouldn’t be making jokes like that if it was his own kids’ school this happened at. He’s a fucking douchebag that no excuse can cover for.

Comedians make jokes about horrific events all the time. Holocaust jokes, 9/11 jokes, catholic priest pedo jokes, etc. The moment those they went from victim to activist they yielded the protection you describe and so even though the joke is not funny at all, it’s not out of bounds. Just lame.

I just re-listened to it. They were laughing cause he said he thought he should leave the NATION... cause 'everyone currently hated him here in America' is the subtext. It's self-deprecating humor and I love it.
