But I wear that shit like a badge of honor. Pearl Jam have meant the world to me. They are a part of my growing up, of being who I am. And I really don't give a shit who knows it.

I've found there's invariably a whole host of unwelcome associations that become attached to you as a result of admitting a fondness for Pearl Jam. It's easier to just avoid the subject.

i tried for awhile, and believe I was making headway, but in the end its not worth the effort. Plus, cheerleading for a band I dont think has made a great album this millennium does kind of reek of being the 'boring dork who hasn't bought an album in 20 years'.

I don't think it's that limited, I've seen plenty of people who are of the generation slightly older than most Pearl Jam fans horrified by them too (those people who were heavily into the 80s alternative scene, etc.)

I wouldn't so quickly write-off those hipsters. They're the serious music fans, the ones who are out there listening to new records, going to shows; they're the ones who'll ultimately shape the way this period is understood.

They'll shape the way it's understood by the next generation of people who are just like them, but I imagine they'll have about the same effect on the general public that the last generation's elite had on this one--which is to say, not much of one. To most people, "the '90's" is still Vanilla Ice, alternative rock, TLC, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, etc., not Pavement and Slint; to most people, "the '80's" are still Bananarama and "Hey Mickey," not The Replacements and Minor Threat. Most "serious" music fans have no more of a clue what they're talking about than "lowbrow" music fans; ultimately it's just two different demographics of listener. Write 'em all off and like what you like.

I guess I'd kinda hoped for some responses saying that No Code or Vitalogy were like LedZep4 or DSOTMoon and were highly regarded among the young rock stoner teens/uni/college guys. Is it just PJ or does Nevermind and the like fall into that too? Are Nirvana/RHCP/Soundgarden/AIC at all regarded or merely scoffed at?

Maybe when my son trawls through my music as a teen (even though he undoubtedly will be subjected to it before then), maybe he will treasure his 'discovery' then.

Most of the people I hang with haven't got a clue about music generally, they like what they like but make zero effort to source new tuneage. I say you should never turn your back on your musical roots - like what you like and stand by it. Seriously, you'd rather not say that you like a band because of the reaction you're expecting? That's seriosuly weak sauce there. Grow a pair and who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks.
