I think I just hate talking about music. It's such a pointless thing to talk about and 99% percent of posts about music are "I like this" or "I don't like it".
What makes music different from any other artform in this regard, you STUPID FUCKHEAD?
I read Burt's post as basically saying that conversations about music tend to be used as taste signifiers for people and yield nothing much beyond vanity statements.

Music is low hanging fruit that is accessible to many more people than some other art forms, so the conversations around music are more susceptible to the shallow takes from the ignorant masses?

I think There Is Nothing Left to Lose is really good as well. But they do have a lot of mediocre albums.

I think, with movies for example, it's easier to make concrete judgments about craft or intention or storytelling than you can with music. Most musicians we talk about are capable enough to make the kind of music they want, so mostly you have to take it or leave it. Thus most posts become "this band sucks" or "no they don't!" I imagine that people with a music background can hear a lot more than I can and have the vocabulary to say something interesting about it, though.

Music seldom (if ever) hits me on an intellectual level. I only experience it emotionally. It makes me feel good or it doesn't. That's not very interesting to talk about, even if I could, which I can't.

But mostly I'm just shitposting on a Saturday. :comp:

Then there are the psueds who vomit out a bunch of flowery nonsense that says nothing. Most professional music critics fit in this category.

Can you elaborate on your two designations of Great and great?
In my mind the former refers to something that is truly elite or standard-bearing, or at least really stands tall as an undeniably exceptional piece of craftsmanship, where the latter is the kind of casual everyday hyperbole people use in conversation to refer to something they really enjoy.

I think the first Foo Fighters album is very good, and I have an emotional connection to it that bolsters that very-good-ness up to another level of special; I would call it "a great album" in casual conversation without much guilt. But if I was considering it in the context of something serious, like an RM ranking thread, I'm not sure it would quite clear that capital-G bar.

Agree but their fans would argue that Funeral is excellent. The most I’ve ever enjoyed something by Arcade Fire was when they played The Last Time backing Mick Jagger on SNL.

I am not a huge fan of the Arcade Fire but I do think that at least Funeral and The Suburbs are pretty excellent records.

I don’t find creed or nickelback to be mediocre. More like terrible. But that’s just my thought.

I dont think about Foo Fighters at all. At least Creed and Nicelback suck. The Foos are just vanilla mediocrity.

That first album and its b-sides are fantastic but everything after sucks (to a greater or lesser degree).

Maybe Dave should go back to writing and recording everything himself.
