If I were new to the band and not nearly 30 years in I would be all about this song, but I feel like more than even Even Flow that this song has just played itself out. I did feel like that with Even Flow for a while but I feel like the Home Shows and focus on homelessness somehow added new depth and a renaissance for the song. Rooting for Black is like rooting for Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky.
Black never had a music video though

that’s like saying because it is Black it had all these athletic advantages so it’s not that special

Black didn’t have any advantages

it made its way on it’s own

against all odds in a video-centric world

I mean I never thought of it as having some advantage to others, just that while it is a great song, it’s too much for me. It’s that song that your bro who stopped listening to Pearl Jam after Vitalogy because “bro, it’s not Ten, it f—- sucks, man!” still froths at the mouth for at 45 years of age with his backwards fitted baseball cap and stickman tattoo he now regrets because they’re f—-ckin’ lame and haven’t made another album that sound like Ten.

Basically, the fanfare behind Black is the worse Pearl Jam fan you know. I don’t know why but I really needed to get that out.

That aside, it sometimes also bothers me that Ed is dead center in this song but this is Mike’s most soulful moment.

i am sorry you’ve had such a traumatic experience with Black

but I applaud your ability to look deep within yourself and identify the sources of your (once) unconscious bias

It’s a real shame. Maybe at the next Pearl Jam show I will dress like Eddie Vedder complete with a wristband halfway up my forearm, look at my neighbor and say “bro, I hope they play Black!”

With more tolerable lyrics both Black and Alive would still be great to me and listenable. Black is a sappy, hopeless mess and regarding Alive, I don't give a sh*t about a real or fake character being molested by his mom! I'm pissed that Ed screwed 2 potentially great and timeless songs up because he was or still is an attention whore or whatever the reason was. Play the opening riffs and just skip to the guitar solos already.

But for the record, i no longer think ed is a p*ssy. He must have just had some p*ssy moments back then, like many have. I just wish he would have kept his p*ssy moments to himself. "F*ck that p*ssy shit"!

This is like watching a highway pile-up developing over the course of a week. I can't look away.

I needed to rant today. I hope that wasn't p*ssy of me! Anyway, this saved it, i think:

Ok, so possibly he wanted to write lyrics for those songs that some youth or whatever could relate to but what does that do for me as a mid 40s person?

If pearl jam fans dig deep they'll find when they hear Black come on the radio (the only time they listen to it), they really wish the song was about how ed likes his coffee rather than some young dude who's hopeless about life after the break up with his pseudo-fling.

thought of it for 30 secs & this isnt very hard, the remaining tracks should go to No Way, Ghost, Jeremy, Unemployable, Take the Long Way

I only recently realized that No Way is a 5-star song for me.

Y'know, this would be a pretty great lineup, too. I think I like it about the same as mine.

Alive is my favorite song ever, and it should still be Dance. Both because it is the best song on Gigaton and for how important it is as a song and what it heralded.

I like No Way far more than Alive, but I share the sentiment re: No Way. Which is why I said "poor No Way." Because as much as I adore the song, DotC belongs on this compilation.
