Re: What are you currently watching on TV?
I mentioned this earlier in the thread--my wife's very right-wing, pro-Trump parents LOVE this show, so we've had serious hesitation about watching a show that is talked about as if it's the story of the poor patriarch besieged by modern culture and big government into giving up his Traditional Family Values. And I don't think the trailers do a lot to dispel this impression. But learning it's made by Taylor Sheridan, who did Sicario and Hell or High Water (two movies that are not, to my mind, simple right-wing stagings of a black-and-white conflict), and remembering that my wife's parents are not particularly discerning viewers of television (the type of people who would be like, "damn, Don Draper is so cool!"), we've reconsidered.dad wrote:My reasons are shallow, but here goes...washing machine wrote:MD, dad, Trag, or anyone really. What exactly is it about Yellowstone that makes you not want to dive it?
originally, i thought this was a period piece about settling the west. i enjoy things like that. i know now it's not.
over the holiday, i had a brief conversation with some in-laws here in okc, in-laws i clash with ideologically (big time), and one of them talked this show up like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. it was then i decided i would opt out. this particular person has also spouted off qanon-specific garbage i can't let go of, therefore their opinion means nothing to me.
awfully close-minded of me, i know.
That said, I don't think it's closed-minded of you to, faced with too many streaming objets, decide not to prioritize a show that has been talked about in hushed tones by the #rememberBenghazi crowd. It sounds like it's unfair to the show that this is the case, but I think it's an understandable choice all the same.

For what it's worth, there's enough articles about how Yellowstone is specifically made for the silent majority that it makes me wonder if it was part of the network's publicity campaign.epilogue wrote:I had no idea there was a red state thing (perceived or actual) with the show.
Are people saying the same thing about the spin-off? That seems like it might be more in line with what some people want from the OG series. Just based on trailers, that is.

I don't disagree with any of that. I do think those who dismiss this show on ideological grounds are probably missing out on a damn good story.Mickey wrote:I mentioned this earlier in the thread--my wife's very right-wing, pro-Trump parents LOVE this show, so we've had serious hesitation about watching a show that is talked about as if it's the story of the poor patriarch besieged by modern culture and big government into giving up his Traditional Family Values. I wish trag would watch it if only so I could pick his brain about how accurately Bozeman or that general region are portrayed. Trag once told me that he loves the rodeo, and there's a bit of that in there too. Wondering how much of that is real life.

Yeah but in a world of too-many-options nearly any principle of selection is as good as any other.washing machine wrote:I don't disagree with any of that. I actually need to watch the pilot again. Often is the case with these ensemble casts that I feel kind of disoriented keeping track of place/characters until about episode 3 or 4.

On a related note, if you're ever wondering what Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange TX (where I'm originally from) is like, it's exactly like the bar scene set there in True Detective S1.

Re: What are you currently watching on TV?
reid — we take in a lot of similar aesthetic territory, so i don’t mean this as a criticism of you, but the reason ive not watched yellowstone is it looks bad. bad writing, mediocre acting, a lack of general aesthetic brio. it looks like week-to-week, garbage-in, garbage-out serialized melodrama. i definitely don’t need entertainment to be politically palatable. i don’t necessarily even need it to be art. but it has to have some aesthetic sophistication - even if that means self-consciously rejecting sophistication.
let’s say for a minute that yellowstone actually has an interesting slant on the place’s history of oppression & exploitation. there’s still the business of rendering it aesthetically. seems like it’s not so interested in that second problem. lots of reasons for that, but best leave them aside.
anyway, another fucking county heard from.
