Took a break of about 36 hours from Getting Killed - that was all I could stand.

First listen done and it was strong. Love that its not just "paint by numbers" stuff of which there's so much out there these days. By that I mean it kept me interested as someone not previously familiar with Geese. I enjoyed the variety and constant bops.

I'll go back to it and re-listen for sure but so far the Goose album and the Geese album are both strong outings this year.

Okay, let’s do this…again.

Trinidad - this is a great start. This is sort of spastic but the approach fits them well. Experimental to start is bold and I am into it. So far we’re quite good.

Cobra - this song structure up against the vocals works exceptionally well. Up the ante on enjoyment with this song. It features some interesting layering of sounds but has an almost laid back feel for an album already feeling like everything and the kitchen sink approach to throwing in as many layers of sounds as can fit.

Husbands - this one almost reminds me of Mellow Gold era Beck. He was adept on that album of taking what almost sounded like a collage of junk sounds and turning it into something with a killer beat. The percussion and drums bring that feel and the vocals follow that lead. 3/3 quite good. I could have been wrong in my initial assessment.

There are two Goose albums. Both are quite good.

As for Geese, both Projector and 3D Country are very good albums. It made my initial thoughts on this even more surprising because this is a band I am in for the journey on and have been since that first album.

Getting Killed - okay, I was wrong. I like this quite a bit. I do still think the vocals are challenging to the point where you need to be in the mood to hear that. But the music is absolutely killer. This song is I think really representative of the album thus far in that there’s some basic hooks buried amongst a busy layered approach. 4/4.

Islands of Men - in the first part of this song, I am getting more of the vocals that I think were more in line with their existing catalogue, mostly because they fit the song so well and don’t pull away from what’s happening with the music. That’s the secret sauce right there. This might be the least interesting musically so far, but they are serving the song really well here. 5/5.

100 Horses - this feels like the first song that’s kind of vocal rambling, as if this one came up stream of consciousness, and the music feels like it’s trying to keep up. In the end they catch each other.

Half Real - this one picks up from 100 Horses. It’s not too alike, just that the vocals are up front. I think earlier where the music feels like it’s in the lead, that I am fully into. This isn’t bad, but it doesn’t capture you the way those first 5 songs draw you in. If the first five songs were 5 stars for me, the next two are 3.5 to 4. Still solid to good, but not the way this started.

Au Pays du Cocaine - the music here starts a bit more simply than what the rest of this album has been bringing, almost like a psychedelic ballad. The vocals are similarly toned down at the start. This approach provides a relief of sorts, but is also really beautiful musically. It then builds really nicely, palpable tension as the intensity grows and releases at the end.

Bow Down - that intro is killer! This one is quickly becoming a favorite. The frenetic energy of the music is taking the lead again, and the vocals fit that vibe. It’s hanging out in the space that the last song built to. I really enjoy this.

Taxes - this song has two personalities. It starts almost understated and then that bright guitar comes in and this soars in a U2-like anthem and becomes this epic track. Wow.

Long Island City Here I Come - this song also contains multiple movements, all quite interesting and engaging. A really good way to close this album. Another frenetic build. Damn this one gets so good.

I was definitely off on this album, initially distracted by the vocals, and I think this is one where it really helps to listen to the album front to back rather than hitting random tracks. It has a space you kind of need to live in for 45 minutes, even if the songs are not overtly communicating with each other. I don’t think album of the year is so far off for this. I would say it’s between this, KGLW’s album, and the Goose albums for me this year.

Second listen and i could totally see how someone would be turned off by the vocals. They are not easy. I do feel its closer to Thom Yorke sometimes. Like a more folky wild Yorke.

Musically i said its radiohead, the stones from the 70s and Nick Cave, and i feel its a good description.

I kinda love how tight and loose most of the songs are.
