If I watched Gladiator and they all had American accents, I don't think that would bother me. But if they spoke with Italian accents (or some kind of faux Latin), I'd probably laugh. I do kinda hate that the mostly fake British accent is used as a stand-in for anything historical. Outside of Lord of the Rings, it sounds kinda ridiculous to me these days. Just speak American!

Is Jared Leto ever not great? The guy seems like a total chode, but boy can he act.
(I haven't seen that Morbin' Time movie though. Looked stupid as hell)

Bad accents bother me more than no accents. By which I mean: if an actor is putting on an accent but they are inconsistent, unconvincing, or their natural accent keeps slipping through, I find that distracting. These things are part of immersion and part of the performance, they can be worked on and improved.

Again, consistency is the least they could do. I would be happier if they all spoke with the same accent, be it American, English or whatever. But yeah, it would be nice if actors would learn to speak an appropriate accent because it shows they care. Do you think it was easy for Daniel Day Lewis or Christian Bale to transform their voices in nearly all of their best roles? No, but they did it because they cared.

To be properly accurate I guess they would actually have to speak French.
I would prefer to hear actual French with subtitles, yes. I personally do not need big american movie stars doing shitty accents in these movies. Why not just hire French actors? Or if you must, bilingual French/English speaking actors to speak English so they at least have legitimate accents, if the big movie stars can't pull it off. Jodie Comer was fantastic and accurate in The Last Duel, then you have Matt Damon and Ben Affleck doing whatever it is they're doing.
Ah man Affleck is so good in that
Meh

Surely there are great actors with appropriate accents. It doesn't have to be either/or. Give a French actor a chance instead of going with Matt friggin' Damon ffs.
Can you name them? No you can't, and that's why they'll never make a big budget Hollywood movie with French actors.
And anyway, it's about communicating ideas, even in historical biopics. To do that you have to speak the language of the audience, not the actual people. If it were made in Bollywood, would you expect everyone to be French? No you would not.
You understand nothing about art!
You are talking about them wanting to make money so they cater to the biggest audience, who happens to speak “American”.
Good art would be to have French actors
Good investment would be to have big name with bad accent actors
