The novels are related but the movies aren’t
But they're in the same universe though, right? They both have Hannibal Lecter, Jack Crawford, etc.
Get bent.

Fellowship is my favorite, too, but I kind of tend to think of all three movies as one big project. The subsequent films aren't sequels in the typical sense, to me

Haven't watched any since I was like eighteen or nineteen. Kind of interested to watch the Cuaron one, though

The movies themselves are unrelated.

Red Dragon however is a sequel to Silence of the Lambs. Well, prequel.
What makes them unrelated? The different actors?
Manhunter is an adaptation of Red Dragon. It is a stand alone film with no sequel and some genuinely terrible performances.

Silence of the Lambs is an adaptation of Silence of the Lambs and it does not take anything from Manhunter. Though the book it's based on is a sequel, the film is not a sequel to any film. It's a reboot of the franchise but starting in the middle. There are no terrible performances.

Red Dragon and Hannibal are direct sequels to Lambs and also have nothing at all to do with Manhunter or its terrible performances.

I think Joe is already saying this, but the post gets a little confusing to me with movies and books sharing names so I want to untangle it.

The Silence of the Lambs (book) is a sequel to Red Dragon (book). Manhunter (movie) is an adaptation of Red Dragon (book). It's also a cool and stylish movie, worth watching

The Silence of the Lambs (movie) is an adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs (book), but it doesn't acknowledge the events of Manhunter (movie) at all. It casts a new guy as Hannibal, it changes his characterization completely, it changes his holding cell. It even changes the spelling of his name (Lecter, which is novel-accurate, versus Lecktor which is how they spelled it in Manhunter for some reason).

More significantly, it was produced and distributed by different companies, and not marketed as a sequel to Manhunter because Manhunter flopped on release. The Silence of the Lambs (movie) is also an absolute masterpiece.

You can sort of call The Silence of the Lambs (movie) a sequel to Manhunter, but there are too many details that are different. It's like if you called Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie a sequel to the old animated The Hobbit adaptation. Doesn't really work.

Years later, after TSOL film and its sequel Hannibal proved very profitable, they decided to try their hand at adapting Red Dragon (book) with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal, more firmly establishing it within the same world as the other two movies. It's a bad movie, directed by mega-hack Brett Ratner, and it very artificially pumps up Hannibal's role in the narrative where in the book (and in Manhunter) he's only in one scene). They even tease an appearance of Clarice Starling at the end.

So you could say Red Dragon (movie) is a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs (movie) because it was made after it but takes place before it.

Then there's the prequel novel and movie Hannibal Rising which are not even worth acknowledging. Thomas Harris clearly realized he had a cash cow in his hands and nothing else he wrote seemed to get any traction.

Damn, his filmography is pretty awful, but I enjoyed Red Dragon well enough.

It skates by on good performances by Edward Norton, Emily Watson and (especially) Ralph Fiennes, but it's directed with all the sense of style and artistry of a soap detergent commercial. I also hate the way they changed the ending. The novel is good

Fiennes and Watson were good yeah, but that movie is such an awful one. Its so fucking bland.

Manhunter is a stylish masterpiece. Thats the one you gotta see.

Just read the book. Red Dragon (novel) is far and away better than either movie adaptation.

The second half of the third season of the TV show Hannibal adapts that same story and does a good job with it. With some pretty major changes, but still good.
