I was fully on board with Ten, but Vs. cemented PJ as the band for me, and helped them pull ahead of Nirvana, REM, and Metallica - who were the other groups I was getting obsessed with. For many years I had it ahead of Ten and had it as PJ's second best album

I think this is also the album that set the template for what a Pearl Jam album is, how to listen to it, what to expect, etc. Ten, for all is brilliance, plays like an outlier given the rest of the catalog

It also sounds like no other PJ album. The reverb… the drumming… It really sounds out of place when listening thru the whole catalogue in shuffle mode.

Why does that need to be a double album? They’re not even putting any extra tracks on there.

It's 45rpm.

Is that supposed to be a higher quality sound? The faster the better? If not, why the change from 33 1/3 like normal LPs?

“Supposedly”. But really it just feels like a marketing scheme that the industry started adopting in the last 10 years to keep selling represses. Kind of like the 180g pressings, or “audiophile quality”.

Target's got an exclusive clear vinyl on a single LP.

https://www.target.com/p/pearl-jam-vs-3 ... A-89809200

It's $25.

That’s why I stay away from vinyl. They’re preying on the suckers that must have this “best” version and every subsequent version is the “best.”

Plus, I can’t listen to it in the car…

It's more about the roomier grooves for the stylus to run through, than the speed.
Depending on the production, it can be an improvement (take the 25th anniversary Yield for example).
But Vs is not Yield. I can't convince myself that a 45rpm treatment would make much of a difference on Vs.

If they wanted to be the most ultra of retro, they’d go to 10-inch 78s
