This is where the American misuse of "the left" becomes a problem. Liberals (who are not leftists) are, or at least were, against gun rights. Actual leftists (who have no mainstream representation in American politics) - less so, because of exactly the kind of thing that's happening right now.

Which one of us gets to be Hannibal of Carthage?

Far Right: All guns, for all people, all the time, no regulation
Far Left: How about some background checks, registration, and maybe limits on assault rifles?
Horseshoe Theory: No one can tell the difference between these two extreme philosophies.

Again, that is not the far left.

It's not even the modern liberal position outside the US.

Fair. I think you're right that there is no real representation for the far left.
Because I can point to elected members of Congress with the first philosophy, and can't point to any elected human with anything further left than the second philosophy.

Do you have an actual position yourself? Or do you just default to whatever The Party dictates at any given time?

Horseshoe theory observations can be interesting. But I've noticed the idea sometimes surfaces as a flimsier version of "Both sides are the same" and is trotted out when the more direct version appears even stupider than normal.
Also, sometimes it is compressed down until it is basically like "People have common goals and interests." And at that point it's like, congratulations dude on realizing something that everyone else already knew.

This is a thread about unity and finding common ground. Sow your division and hatred somewhere else.
