kind of surprised there isn’t more talk about this. agreed that it is terrific. i had only seen the one main trailer, and still wasn’t really sure what to expect and i went in with tempered hopes, but whatever reservations i might have had were erased pretty quickly. it doesn’t rehash the old movies, it definitely takes some chances, and for me at least i just had a lot of fun watching it. most of all - especially with the ending - i am really curious and excited to see what’s next.

I'm pretty hyped to see it, but I'm not into seeing horror in the theater. The audience ruins it for me.

I'd say it's more thriller/drama versus horror, at least compared to the first two movies. Unless you're horrified by giant zombie dong in your face.

Apparently I'm cool with it.

This is a movie full of ideas and bold choices. I'm not sure all of them work but the care and craft are clear. Garland is wrestling with some major themes. I wonder how much he regrets the first film in terms of what he had to say then about humanity. Because this is a stark and stunning about-face. And I'm fucking here for it.

And how are we not talking about Power Rangers at all in this thread?!

i havent seen the first one in a long time, and i didnt quite liked it at time, was he hinting about a miserable humanity? dont remember.

Yeah i love that twist. Specially when everyone in the village, which is supposed to be a nice community, basically believes another type of religion.

I liked that science vs religion side of it.

Eccleston was the military guy right? he was kind of the villain; I loved that message of "militarised human violence is the real enemy", and I liked that 28 Weeks expanded on that theme by bringing the Americans in to save the day

if there's any more "bleak" to come, I think it will come from the Jimmy cult; the film has already examined toxic masculinity in this film but looks to be heading forward to more spiritual themes, as VG says

I'm having a hard time unpacking the Power Rangers of it all. Does anyone have thoughts about that? Or has anyone read any articles that dig into that?

Totally!

I love how Eccelston is presented as a hero (the army will save us!) and reveals himself to be a sort of nihilistic villain.

And then in this one, Fiennes is sold as a dangerous, insane villain that then reveals himself to be a healer, kind and empathic. He's a sort of hero.

He could kill Sampson. But he never does. Even as Sampson tries to kill him. It's a fascinating turn. Fiennes' relationship to his infected vs the way Eccelston treats his. I love that stuff.

Seems the main guy is inspired in Jimmy Savile, a guy who was a dj and some kind of tv figure who was later found out as a child molester. Seems the next movie will be about that as a new form of evil, specially for the main kid
