Farmer John wrote:As far as "representative of their overall sound", Corduroy is a good answer.
Listened to this ep, really fun! I think I'd go with Corduroy as well - PJ feels like a very tricky band to do this for, as the songs that are probably the most popular for general music fans are also probably the least musically representative of the band's sound over the course of their career. I feel like it'd be harder to slot a Ten song into one of their other albums than doing the same exercise for any of their other records.

Farmer John wrote:While “Even Flow” is objectively their most recognizable song amongst the general public across the globe, “Alive” is not far behind, and it might be a better representation of their overall sound. It covers the softer side of the catalogue along with the hard rockin’ jams.
“Better Man” might also be a contender, due to it being a little spritzier than Alive. The song should probably be at least a little spritzy.
dear god man
betterman is NOT spritzy
spritzy PJ ONLY exists in the PRAMG era
prior to that it could be catchy or up tempo
but god knows it wasn't spritzy
band was in muchhhhh better musical shape in the vitalogy era to be pulling some spritzy sh

but you raise a good point
there is modern PJ
and there is classic PJ
the classic PJ signature song is prob somewhere in the first 3 albums
the modern PJ signature song is: ??? (and prob at least a little spritzy)

Unfortunately, modern Pearl Jam might be defined by the Just Breathe's, Sirens, and Future Days of the world.

Dark Matter and Wreckage both went number 1 and were the first number 1s they had since Given To Fly.

i think of The Fixer as the signature song of their modern era
is spritzy and Ed sounds terrible
checks all the boxes

You're confusing the charts. Neither “Dark Matter” nor “Wreckage” charted on the Billboard Hot 100. "Dark Matter" reached number 1 on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, and "Wreckage" peaked at number 2. But "Just Breathe" is the only one of the three to cross over to the Hot 100, peaking at number 78. The distinction between genre-specific charts and the all-genre Hot 100 is important when talking about mainstream impact.

I’ll concede the distinction but according to this Billboard article both DM and Wreckage hit number one on the MAINSTREAM Rock Airplay chart.
Sure, you're right, but the point is "Just Breathe" is still the more successful song charts-wise because it crossed over into the Hot 100

I would say JB is the biggest "hit" since GTF.
I don't believe it is at all representative of modern PJ.
Overall signature song. It's clearly Evenflow. Even the guy getting arrested knows that. "You ever heard of Pearl Jam....Pearl Jam live?"

Even Flow might have been the lead single, one they play the most live, more popular and Jeremy might be the one that really broke the band to the mainstream especially with the video. But the single most identifiable song that defines Pearl Jam and their sound is Alive. It has all the elements of the band and their sound.

I think it's Even Flow: it's pretty much ground zero for the most recognisable thing about their sound to casual listeners (Ed's hurrrrdurrrr vocals), demonstrated by how often it's the go-to choice for parody (granted, two of these examples are by Adam Sandler, maybe he just really likes Even Flow):

Are we talking about signature song in terms of most people would know if you asked them? Or are we talking about the bands actual signature song as fans of that band?
Cos they are two different things and even flow isn’t the answer to either of them

For purposes of this thread, what defines them to the general public. Not necessarily for fans.

as your podcast develops, Jorge, it would be interesting to see how often the public’s defining song and fandom’s probable choice would differ
