I do not have to find my own substitutes. If I know I’m going to be gone in advance, I will let a preferred sub know and assign the job if they want it.

They couldn’t stop me from doing it. As long as I don’t miss a certain number of days in a row, I don’t need to provide a doctor’s note. There are teachers (shitty ones, imo) who use their allotted days every year. Only in our last contract did we get language where we can sell back 100 days for $100 apiece upon retirement. Even with that, I’ve still already got probably another 70 or 80 that I will get nothing for. Good to have banked in case I get a worst-case scenario illness.

What won’t probably let me do this is me. I believe if you’re being paid to do a job, you should be grateful and do it. I also believe not having consistent classroom teachers really hurts kids’ learning and has a ripple effect across the grade level short-term and remaining years long-term. I’ve seen it. But I do need to take better care of myself. I “play hurt” more than I should.

My mom was a university professor and banked like 200 plus sick days over her career. It’s pretty common at the college level I think, because it’s not like profs have to be on campus for more than like 10-15 hours a week, and only for a couple hours at a time.

So the union and university came up with a scheme where any unpaid sick days at retirement go into a big pot that pays for supplemental health care for all who contribute. She basically never has to worry about any medical bills again.

Anyway, you should work to get something like that going, daft.

That would be amazing. We aren’t even allowed to donate our days to colleagues in need.

When I worked at the local community college it was sorta the same. if you didnt use your vacation or sick days they rolled over. The head of the library had over three years worth of days banked.

That’s the sweeter deal, but her vast university system recognized the pattern and knew they had to negotiate a less costly alternative.
