has anybody considered that things aren't operating smoothly today b/c of the uncertainty that's been created by the competing bills being passed back and forth between the house and senate?

Well, a significant number of govvies weren't told they were furloughed until about 10am so they came in to work, got started, and then were told they had to go home for an unknown length of time. I'm sure they weren't happy, but I bet it will be a good party night tonight downtown.

Watching this thread and situation with huge interest, thanks lads.

Ps-I heard Obama on the radio today saying all military personnel and military actions will be unaffected by this.

Military would probably be the very last thing to go without pay. And even then they'd probably be bound to still follow orders. I dunno. I need to read the road or whatever book that was again.

I'd be interested in what the news reports over there are saying. The mainstream media in the US is biased in it's reporting and tends to dumb-down reports into 3 minute segments.

This is something new. In the past the threat of the families of active military not getting pay/benefits has been used to keep shutdowns short in duration. With that situation avoided, this could last a while. We were told to plan to have our federal counterparts out through next week.

I don't know of you guys heard it but our news had a clip of Obama making that assurance to the military and explaining for a minute how operations at home and overseas would remain unaffected.

Other than that it wasn't mentioned on the national news here but I'll keep a close eye on it tomorrow. The markets haven't been affected someone said earlier, so maybe when that happens, it'll have an immediate trickle down or avalanche effect? That'll be news everywhere.
When America goes down everyone does so it will become news even if it isn't now.

Do you think Pearl Jam's doing this is meant to be satire about the current state of America?

Isn't Getaway a song about the government shutting down?

National parks are closed. So any of you travelers wishing to look down at that gaping hole in the ground that's known as the The Grand Canyon, are not allowed to.

All the govvie douche bags in their khakis and J Crew blazers are back in Arlington wondering why they aren't "essential".
